JamesJazGuitar
Nice list, but Jane Fonda made her first film in 1960 and in the 60s was 17 films. Similar with Ann-Margret; first film in 1961 and also 17 films in the 60s. Ann Bancroft made 15 films in the 50s. Anyhow, from the list above of actress that started their career in the 70s I would select Diane Keaton.

sewhite2000
Seems like a good place to list the Oscar-winning females of the '70s! Glenda Jackson, barely remembered today, was an Academy darling, taking home Best Actress twice. In the supporting category, there are several older actresses that probably won't be thought of as '70s actresses, but I listed them anyway. Here's the complete list: Best Actress: 1970 Glenda Jackson, Women in Love 1971 Jane Fonda, Klute 1972 Liza Minelli, Cabaret 1973 Glenda Jackson, A Touch of Class 1974 Ellen Burstyn, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore 1975 Louise Fletcher, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest 1976 Faye Dunnaway, Network 1977 Diane Keaton, Annie Hall 1978 Jane Fonda, Coming Home 1979 Sally Field, Norma Rae Best Supporting Actress: 1970 Helen Hayes, Airport 1971 Chloris Leachman, The Last Picture Show 1972 Eileen Heckart, Butterflies are Free 1973 Tatum O'Neal, Paper Moon 1974 Ingrid Bergman, Murder on the Orient Express 1975 Lee Grant, Shampoo 1976 Beatrice Straight, Network 1977 Vanessa Redgrave, Julia 1978 Maggie Smith, California Suite 1979 Meryl Streep, Kramer vs. Kramer

Dargo
Okay, I'm gonna go off the reservation here and say mine would probably be Catherine Deneuve here... (...okay sure, could never really understand very much of what she was sayin' in her movies, but HEY, who CARES?!!!) ..

sewhite2000
Well, OP aside, this thread should probably be retitled "Hottest Actress of the '70s!" Not that this can't be a criterion for determining one's favorite, of course ...

I listed some favorite actresses, while avoiding those that had already been named, which narrowed the field as the OP named a lot of the usual choices. If I include those already named, and if I judge the actresses based solely on their films of the 1970's, then my top choices would be: Diane Keaton Jane Fonda Glenda Jackson Sissy Spacek Vanessa Redgrave
Dommy
Madeline Kahn made 4 classic movies in the 70's. 2 are actually masterpieces and she 2 got Academy Award nominations and 2 Golden Globe nominations. Her first 4 films they were What's Up, Doc? 1972, Paper Moon 1973< Blazing Saddles 1974 and Young Frankestein 1974.

I keep looking for the MARIONETTE strings, and could never tell if she was lookin' at ME, or who might be BEHIND me! And even though she's been making films since the late '50's (and mostly in Scandinavia) she came to prominence in the U.S. in the '70's. WHOM am I talkin' about?---- LIV ULLMAN of course! Surprised due to the amount of "so-called" foreign film aficionados there are claimed to be here, that she wasn't mentioned earlier (and instead of not at ALL) kinda surprised me. And just WHY---- did SALLY KELLERMAN and JANE ALEXANDER get overlooked? Two of MY favorites, anyway.... Sepiatone

Dargo
I'm now gonna go off the reservation here again a bit, BUT because the topic heading does NOT say anything about our favorite actresses from 1970s having to be "MOVIE" actresses, I'm going to add a couple of names whose careers were primarily on television during that decade and who were favorites of mine during that time: Mary Tyler Moore Suzanne Pleshette (...and no, this is not just because both of these ladies were very attractive, but also because I thought their work itself in their two sitcoms was very good)

Somebody's got to be first to do something, and since this isn't FaceBook, not too big a deal should be made of it anyway. And besides..... It STILL doesn't explain the oversight about SALLY KELLERMAN and JANE ALEXANDER, does it? Now, if you don't like them, feel free to rag. Last I looked, this IS still America.
