Maybe they just hadn't rehearsed it much. I've posted this elsewhere, but I still can't believe that Tom Hanks has never hosted the Oscars. He'd be fun. Maybe he would be impossible to get because of his shooting schedules (take a look at his 2020 projects on IMDb sometime). I remember that he hosted the Academy's Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony in 1992 when the special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen received a special Oscar -- the Gordon E. Sawyer Award -- presented to "an individual in the motion picture industry whose technological contributions have brought credit to the industry." Hanks gushed about Harryhausen's career and said, "Some people say 'Casablanca' or 'Citizen Kane'. I say 'Jason and the Argonauts' is the greatest film ever made."

She became a major box-office attraction because of the "Twilight" movie franchise. And she has been praised for her more recent efforts, which have been eclectic. She also seems to be working all the time (a screen biography of the troubled actress Jean Seberg and the upcoming thriller "Underwater" are examples). In 2015, she became the first American woman to win an acting honor at the César Awards -- the French equivalent of the Oscars. She won the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria," a 2014 drama written and directed by the French director Olivier Assayas.
jakeem
Bob Strauss @bscritic I've heard from a knowledgeable source that #1917Movie has something like 77 individual shots. That explains why the framing and compositions of this purgatorial World War I film's "single take" conceit look so terribly exquisite. Standard-issue war story, gorgeous cinematic art. 10:46 AM · Jan 10, 2020·Twitter Web App

CinemaInternational
It sounds like the Oscar nominations will only be announced in an internet live stream this year, and not on Good morning America. She's probably a bit gun shy because her relationship with one of her co-stars became a messy news story. She joked about it the first time she served as guest host of "Saturday Night Live" because the world's most famous Tweeter attacked her character. It might be one of the reasons why she prefers to do more arthouse movies than potential blockbusters.
