Hollywood is on track to face its worst-ever year at the box office since the 1970s.

I was looking for somewhere within the article that stated why in the 1970s the box office was considered so poor, but it never did.

I suppose part of it stems from the fact that release patterns were so strange in the pre-Spielberg/Lucas blockbuster years. Many movies were released regionally instead of nationwide. Things began to change with the success of "Jaws" in 1975.

Actress #RomolaGarai's feature writing-directing debut #Amulet is an ambitious hybrid of slow-building body horror, refugee paranoia and sly feminist revenge fantasy. Some narrative cheats and missteps here, but overall a very promising, uniquely imagined & atmospheric 1st film.

#Radioactive tries to spice up its standard #biopic approach with hokey flash-forwards to future applications of the #Curies' scientific discoveries. #RosamundPike does her best, but the recent French/Polish #MarieCurie:#TheCourageofKnowledge was stronger all around.

Only 16 people have achieved EGOT status, starting with Richard Rodgers (of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame) and most recently with the newest inductee, composer Alan Menken. Here's your guide to all the winners, from Whoopi Goldberg to Mel Brooks

My take on the Emmy noms—Netflix scoring more noms than all broadcast networks combined, Disney+ beating Apple TV+ to a series nom, Quibi showing signs of life, timely WATCHMEN far outpacing all other shows, BETTER CALL SAUL's egregious acting snubs & more

#GordonLightfoot:#IfYouCouldReadMyMind is an adoring but hardly hagiographic documentary about #Canada's 5th or 6th greatest singer/songwriter (Gord appreciates #Drake more than I do). Lots of wonderful, vintage footage, solid illustrations of his many musical talents. #Beautiful

#TheFightMovie documents 4 cases the #ACLU fought against #Trump's abuses over the last few years. Some interesting character insights and lots of wonky details for lawyering fans. But even if, like me, you support the group's causes, the one-sided argument here can grow tedious.

#TheSecretMovie: Romantic/family film supersap spun off of the self-help bestseller's platitudes. Plus unnecessary secrets(!) there to make the witless plot work (I use the word "work" generously). So many bad literary forms in one movie, it's almost - generously - "impressive."
