#clemency, which I saw @AFIFEST, is the anti-#JustMercy and all the better for it. Tough, well-written, believable at every surprising turn and a total, non-pandering bummer - as any film about the death penalty should be. #AlfreWoodard is devastatingly controlled yet 100% human.

#SophieDeraspe's sure-footed #Antigone, seen @AFIFEST, cannily updates some of #Sophocles' themes to a contemporary Quebec (and social media) milieu, and makes the tragedy-struck family Middle Eastern immigrants. The teenage title character is masterfully played by #NahémaRicci.

Caught up with #Bacurau @AFIFEST and was darkly tickled that I did. Social inequity in the Brazilian boonies turns into delightfully cold-hearted ultra-violence and savage self-defense. Plus #UdoKier at his "I-am-not-a-Nazi"est and #SoniaBraga going full old witch. Total treat.

In #TotheEndsoftheEarth @AFIFEST, a perky Japanese TV travelogue hostess (#JPOP star #AtsukoMaeda) has existential crises off-camera in Uzbekistan. Master of unease #KiyoshiKurosawa adds stunning location work and refreshing humanism to this journey outside his horror realm.

Saw #Deerskin @AFIFEST and was thoroughly amused. #TheArtist's #Oscar-winning #jeandujardin redeems himself as an increasingly crazy, divorced weirdo who really likes his new fringed jacket. Blazing French up-and-comer #AdeleHaenel enables with enthusiasm. Absurdity in the Alps.

Director #PaulaHernandez goes in tight on members of a vacationing, Argentine middle class family for #TheSleepwalkers@AFIFEST, the film's focus is on female dissatisfaction and male stupidity, but blessedly humane as didactic about it . . . until it isn't. Well-acted.

My favorite film @AFIFEST 2019 was family relationship expert #HirokazuKoreEda's 1st production outside Japan, #thetruth. It's a sophisticated study of a fictional French actress that's also the greatest tribute to star #Catherinedeneuve one could imagine. + #Binoche & Hawke!

1917 is a masterful study of suspense, artistry, and timing. I’m in awe of how Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins pulled it off. Definite nominations for picture, director, cinematography, and design. Possibly score and sound editing too. A major wow.

Remember that Sam Mendes’ 1917 is co-written by a woman. Her name is Krysty Wilson-Cairns. This is her feature debut as a writer; one in which she conceived a one-shot war film. When it comes to female voices, it’s not just screen presence or the director’s chair that counts.

Who should host the #Oscars in 2020?

How about Mindy Kaling?

I'm not sure people like her movies. Her recent film with Dame Emma Thompson was a box-office dud.

In North America, #Frozen2 DisneyFrozen2_Emoji_Elsa.png set a new animated record for the month of November — as well as scoring the third-best domestic start of all time for any animated movie behind 'Incredibles 2'

#Frozen2 went a long way in reviving the November box office, where ticket sales had tumbled 27 percent behind last year after such misses as 'Terminator: Dark Fate' and 'Doctor Sleep'

#ABeautifulDayintheNeighborhood Sony_A_Beautiful_Day_in_the_Neighborhoodplaced third behind #Frozen2 and holdover #FordvFerrari DisneyFordVFerrari_Emoji.png
The Russo brothers-produced #21Bridges, a cop thriller starring Chadwick Boseman, placed No. 4 with $9.1 million

#CitizenK (the title refers to documentary subject #MikhailKhodorkovsky) views post-Soviet Russian politics through the eyes of a fallen, now determinedly anti-Putin oligarch. Informative, complex as far as it goes, honest enough to warn the viewer not to believe all it tells you

#WhenLambsBecomeLions is an interesting documentary about Kenyan ivory poachers and the salary-stiffed rangers charged with stopping them. Neither factions, nor of course the targeted elephants, have it very easy, and no one comes out looking particularly evil or heroic.

In #CorpusChristi, which screened @AFIFEST, a parolee from juvie impersonates a priest in a small, grieving Polish town and turns out to be pretty good at the job. Gritty, funny, honest and unpredictable enough to subvert redemption story cliches, if not all its Jesus allegories.

Film noir tropes, dispersed timelines and, well, whistling are entertainingly mixed up in what is still #CorneliuPorumboiu's most accessible film yet, #TheWhistlers@AFIFEST , it features the great hard face of Romanian cinema, #VladIvanov, as a pathetically comic police patsy.
