Det Jim McLeod
A good year, From Here To Eternity is one of my top ten favorite films. I think Montgomery Clift gave the best performance of the year and one of the greatest of all time. House Of Wax is another favorite of mine from that year.
Sepiatone
Of the ones you listed the only ones I really liked were: 2, 6, 7. A few of the others were passable, but no great shakes IMHO. A lot came out that year, so I'd have to do a lot of looking into both what came out and which of all of those I've seen and try to remember how much and if I liked them. Just off the top I can offer... BENEATH THE !2 MILE REEF THE CLOWN THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES Sepiatone

cody1949
1953 was the greatest year for movies that became classics since 1939. SHANE IS THE GREATEST WESTERN EVER MADE. A diamond of rare beauty. Perfection in its simplicity.
Bethluvsfilms
Actually I think THE SEARCHERS is the greatest western ever made. SHANE just put me to sleep.

That's what THE SEARCHERS did for me. John Ford's best movies were HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY and THE GRAPES OF WRATH. Some might call it his muckraking liberal period.

Not that THE GRAPES OF WRATH and HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY weren't great films, they are. But THE SEARCHERS to me was where Ford really hit it out of the ball park and I feel that John Wayne turned in his best performance ever.

He was very human. None of those typical remarks like ...well I'll tell you pilgrim. John Wayne concluded his career with his best film;just like Henry Fonda did with ON GOLDEN POND. Wayne was excellent in THE SHOOTIST as well, I won't deny that. But I still feel Ethan Edwards in THE SEARCHERS was his best role. He did bring a human side to Ethan, despite the character's hatred and bigotry. Henry Fonda was excellent in ON GOLDEN POND, but I personally think he should have won for THE GRAPES OF WRATH, one of the best movies of all time, I think we can agree on that at least.

What's amazing is The Searchers did not receive one Oscar nod. The color cinematography alone was worth a nom, not to mention John Wayne, John Ford and the Picture itself.
