Bill Barr & T's new DOJ ?

Don't use Asians to maintain white privilege, critics say after DOJ letter to Yale

“This announcement is pure politics — a signal once again that the Trump administration will take extraordinary steps to protect white privilege," a former DOJ official said.

the DOJ’s letter sent to the Ivy League institution on Thursday, in which the feds claimed the school “rejects scores of Asian American and white applicants each year based on their race, whom it otherwise would admit.”

Critics say that in lumping white students with those of Asian descent, the administration is using Asian Americans as a pawn to dismantle affirmative action..........

Legal experts and Justice Department veterans say it's not the attorney general's job to engage in partisan politics.

But with his statements attacking Trump's opponents, they say William Barr is doing exactly that.

"......."They're not interested in compromise. They're not interested in dialectic exchange of views. They're interested in total victory."

Barr added: "They view their political opponents as evil because we stand in the way of their progressive utopia that they're trying to reach."

A few days later in another interview on Fox, Barr had this to say about racism in the middle of a campaign in which that very issue has been front and center.

"People talk about implicit racism or systemic racism. The racism in this country, look no further than our public education system," he said. "That's a racist system, maintained by the Democratic Party and the teachers' union."

.......The Justice Department's mission, Wertheimer noted, is to ensure the fair and impartial administration of justice.

"Now, there's no way you can listen to what he says and watch what he does and conclude he is leading the American people to believe he's going to do a fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans," Wertheimer said. .................

Breaking via NYT:
The Justice Department secretly took steps in 2017 to narrow the Russia investigation, according to former law enforcement officials,

keeping investigators from completing an examination of Trump's personal and business ties to Russia.

Justice Dept. Never Fully Examined Trump’s Ties to Russia, Ex-Officials Say

"........produced a report that outlined Russia’s wide-ranging operations to help get Mr. Trump elected and the president’s efforts to impede the inquiry.

But law enforcement officials never fully investigated Mr. Trump’s own relationship with Russia, even though some career F.B.I. counterintelligence investigators thought his ties posed such a national security threat that they took the extraordinary step of opening an inquiry into them.

Within days, the former deputy attorney general Rod J. Rosenstein curtailed the investigation without telling the bureau, all but ensuring it would go nowhere. .......

Barr’s removal of career national security official, weeks before election, raises concerns

A little-known office in the Justice Department has lost its long-time chief.

........Barr's recent decision to remove the head of a Justice Department office that helps ensure federal counterterrorism and counterintelligence activities are legal – and replace him with a political appointee with relatively limited experience.

"It's very alarming," said Katrina Mulligan, who worked for the Obama administration in several national security roles and then, after President Donald Trump's inauguration, joined the Office of Law and Policy in the Justice Department's National Security Division. .......

"the concern here is that you have someone who by all accounts has been doing a great job in a very sensitive role … [and] now within really just weeks of the election is replaced with somebody who is viewed more as a partisan."...............

@SethAbramson

I'm a bit amazed that people are unclear on why Bill Barr is acting as he is and saying what he's saying.

I would ask you to hold in your mind two distinct possible futures:

What happens in Barr's life if Trump wins ?

What happens in Barr's life if Biden wins ?

There you go.

Just to be clear, DOJ's argument that Trump was acting "within the scope of his employment" when he defamed E. Jean Carroll is not an effort to *take over* defense of the suit; it's an effort to have the suit *dismissed*—because the government itself can't be sued for defamation.

William Barr is trying to make Trump’s misogyny officially ‘presidential’

".......For now at least, the case that was known as E. Jean Carroll vs. Donald J. Trump can be docketed as E. Jean Carroll vs. the United States of America.

This is a Hail Mary move by Barr to at least delay Carroll’s case until after the election.

But if Barr fully succeeds in converting this to a federal case, the lawsuit might disappear entirely, as no one can sue the United States of America for defamation.

In the meantime, Barr has essentially conflated the whole country — all of us citizens and taxpayers — with the president and his sordid private debauchery. We the people have unwittingly become surrogates for a known misogynist, with a florid history of sexual impropriety, when he smeared a journalist because she had the temerity to speak up........

Hard to overstate how incredibly irresponsible it is for the ***attorney general***
to make up stories about criminals paying off postal workers to commit voter fraud.

Barr is absolutely out of control.

Attorney General #Barr drew stinging rebuke from legal experts and civil liberties advocates including the

after he told federal prosecutors to more aggressively charge some protesters with crimes—including sedition, under certain circumstances.

'Tyrannical and Un-American': ACLU Rebukes Barr for Urging Sedition Charges Against Protesters

"Treating protest as a form of sedition won't hold up in court," said the ACLU. "But that is clearly not the point here."

:..... legal experts noted that in order to successfully charge someone with sedition, prosecutors must prove that they were part of a conspiracy to overthrow the government or attack government officials, or that they posed an imminent threat to the nation.

......"This is a tyrannical and un-American attempt to suppress demands for racial justice and an end to police violence. Independent and ethical prosecutors should reject this administration's authoritarian impulses."...........

Rep. Clyburn blasts Barr for comparing shutdowns to slavery: Most 'tone-deaf, God-awful thing I've ever heard'

"Slavery was not about saving lives, it was about devaluing lives," Clyburn told CNN's "New Day" on Thursday.

Barr said, "putting a national lockdown, stay-at-home orders, is like house arrest," adding, "other than slavery, which was a different kind of restraint, this is the greatest intrusion on civil liberties in American history."

"You know, I think that that statement by Mr. Barr was the most ridiculous, tone-deaf, God-awful thing I've ever heard," Clyburn said,

calling it "incredible" that the "chief law enforcement officer in this country would equate human bondage to expert advice to save lives."........
