mr6666
@NPR · 32m Legal experts and Justice Department veterans say it's not the attorney general's job to engage in partisan politics. But with his statements attacking Trump's opponents, they say William Barr is doing exactly that. "......."They're not interested in compromise. They're not interested in dialectic exchange of views. They're interested in total victory." Barr added: "They view their political opponents as evil because we stand in the way of their progressive utopia that they're trying to reach." A few days later in another interview on Fox, Barr had this to say about racism in the middle of a campaign in which that very issue has been front and center. "People talk about implicit racism or systemic racism. The racism in this country, look no further than our public education system," he said. "That's a racist system, maintained by the Democratic Party and the teachers' union." .......The Justice Department's mission, Wertheimer noted, is to ensure the fair and impartial administration of justice. "Now, there's no way you can listen to what he says and watch what he does and conclude he is leading the American people to believe he's going to do a fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans," Wertheimer said. ................. https://trib.al/y9RCwGa

mr6666
@kylegriffin1 · 8h Breaking via NYT: The Justice Department secretly took steps in 2017 to narrow the Russia investigation, according to former law enforcement officials, keeping investigators from completing an examination of Trump's personal and business ties to Russia. Justice Dept. Never Fully Examined Trump’s Ties to Russia, Ex-Officials Say "........produced a report that outlined Russia’s wide-ranging operations to help get Mr. Trump elected and the president’s efforts to impede the inquiry. But law enforcement officials never fully investigated Mr. Trump’s own relationship with Russia, even though some career F.B.I. counterintelligence investigators thought his ties posed such a national security threat that they took the extraordinary step of opening an inquiry into them. Within days, the former deputy attorney general Rod J. Rosenstein curtailed the investigation without telling the bureau, all but ensuring it would go nowhere. ....... https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/30/us/politics/trump-russia-justice-department.html

mr6666
Barr’s removal of career national security official, weeks before election, raises concerns A little-known office in the Justice Department has lost its long-time chief. ........Barr's recent decision to remove the head of a Justice Department office that helps ensure federal counterterrorism and counterintelligence activities are legal – and replace him with a political appointee with relatively limited experience. "It's very alarming," said Katrina Mulligan, who worked for the Obama administration in several national security roles and then, after President Donald Trump's inauguration, joined the Office of Law and Policy in the Justice Department's National Security Division. ....... Bogie56
David Frum Retweeted Steve Vladeck @steve_vladeck · 11h Just to be clear, DOJ's argument that Trump was acting "within the scope of his employment" when he defamed E. Jean Carroll is not an effort to *take over* defense of the suit; it's an effort to have the suit *dismissed*—because the government itself can't be sued for defamation.

mr6666
William Barr is trying to make Trump’s misogyny officially ‘presidential’ ".......For now at least, the case that was known as E. Jean Carroll vs. Donald J. Trump can be docketed as E. Jean Carroll vs. the United States of America. This is a Hail Mary move by Barr to at least delay Carroll’s case until after the election. But if Barr fully succeeds in converting this to a federal case, the lawsuit might disappear entirely, as no one can sue the United States of America for defamation. In the meantime, Barr has essentially conflated the whole country — all of us citizens and taxpayers — with the president and his sordid private debauchery. We the people have unwittingly become surrogates for a known misogynist, with a florid history of sexual impropriety, when he smeared a journalist because she had the temerity to speak up........ https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2020-09-11/e-jean-carroll-donald-trump-william-barr
