The nation‘s governors are in talks about creating a multistate consortium to oversee the purchase and distribution of medical supplies across the country — a direct response to the White House’s hands-off approach to the issue, @annagronewold reports

States are pleading for help from the Trump administration as they struggle to handle a torrent of unemployment claims that continues to swell amid the coronavirus crisis

Governors have no choice but to fill in the vacuum of leadership left by the AWOL executive branch of the federal government.

Breaking News: The virus came to the New York area mainly from Europe, not Asia,
genetic analysis shows, arriving weeks before the first confirmed case

===================================

This answers a question by @Acosta
that Dr. Birx and Fauci were trying to avoid in a recent presser:

“The research revealed a previously hidden spread of the virus that might have been detected

IF AGGRESSIVE TESTING PROGRAMS HAD BEEN PUT IN PLACE.”

EYE ON THE NEWS

Waking Up to Reality

Covid-19 exposes the American system’s systemic decay—and our need to update our understanding of the world. April 7, 2020
Covid-19
The Social Order

Had I been asked in late 2019 what would eventually break American global dominance, I’d have said the rise of China. Projections indicated that by 2030 or so, China would overtake the United States as the world’s largest economy. When was the last time the U.S. had not been the largest economy? According to the late economic historian Angus Maddison, it was about 1880. And what nation was the largest economy in that year? China.

My thinking, pre-pandemic, was that the psychic shock of America’s eventual demotion might trigger cultural and political turmoil, as the nation would find itself forced into a reckoning. Then came 2020. The true shock to our civilization has come not from our own self-image but from nature itself. Western elites were clearly not prepared for this turn, a shattering of our conceit that reality is ours to create. In the U.S., bickering about an appropriate official name for Covid-19, along with a sequence of bureaucratic blunders that led to dire shortages of diagnostic testing and medical gear, highlight the core competencies of today’s media and governmental elites: administrative turf wars and verbal jousting to burnish status in positional games. Even in this high-stakes moment, they cannot abandon unproductive old reflexes. In a strange turn of events, twenty-first-century American elites turn out to resemble the Chinese mandarins of yore, absorbed in intricate intrigues at court to advance their careers while European gunboats prowl the waterways.

I remember a few weeks ago when you were bragging there were no new cases there since the twelfth of never.

As Trump’s failures mount, one governor sounds an ominous warning

..............
With coronavirus deaths in the U.S. rapidly approaching 15,000, we are now learning that the federal government’s national stockpile of medical supplies is almost depleted. Meanwhile, the failure to ramp up testing to the needed degree remains a “signature failure,” as the New York Times puts it.
....

For instance, Inslee noted, the state has unused testing capacity right now in large part because it lacks one thing: the swabs needed to take samples.

“It seems ridiculous that the United States can’t produce enough swabs to solve this problem,” Inslee told me. “I have 50 or 60 long-term care facilities that have infections in them that we literally have not been able to do the testing we want of remaining residents and staff.”

....

An ominous warning

Along these lines, Inslee warned of another looming problem.

As coronavirus cases recede in the coming months, if anything, more testing will be required. That’s because when people reassemble, it will be urgent to jump on cases in which people again show symptoms, and test them, to avoid a second wave.

“As we want to reopen our schools, as we want to reopen our industries, the amount of testing we need will actually increase,” Inslee said. “In the second wave, we have to have testing, a resource base, and a contact-tracing base that is so much more scaled up than right now. It’s an enormous challenge.”

...

“What we need now, what won World War II, was a quartermaster,” Inslee said. “That’s how you win wars. That’s what we need — a quartermaster.”

Recently, Trump was directly confronted with glaring evidence of this. His own administration released a report documenting urgent shortages faced by hospital administrators around the country, who offered constructive suggestions on how the federal government can help save American lives.

In response, Trump lashed out in a rage, and pretended those problems are simply nonexistent.

Needless to say, that’s not the quartermaster we need.

The Governor of Washington state was one of the early ones to have to deal with the pandemic crisis.

His frank and honest assessment of the situation brought unbelievable rancor and hateful personal attacks from trump.

Now in the vacuum of leadership on the national level,

Governor Inslee tells us what we should be doing right now to prepare for the next onslaught of the pandemic.

The federal government will end funding for coronavirus testing sites on Friday.

While some sites will transition to being state-managed, others will close as a result.

This as criticism continues that NOT ENOUGH  testing is available.

If he continues to test people the numbers Of Americans infected with a Covid-19 will go up, and his numbers will go down.  He demonstrably cares more about his numbers than American lives. He is a pathetic worthless human being, and a disgrace to this country.

Oh yeah...and the reason he doesn't want any more widespread testing before he wants everyone to get back to work! (said today, I heard...I'd rather chew glass than listen to this man).   The testing itself is a JOKE!!!   They must be hoarding a ton of tests at the WH (everyone gets tested constantly there) but in the real world, it's So Scarce!  Overall, less than 1% of the population has been tested!  (that puts us 44th in a list of 45 'modernized' countries in testing).  In many areas, (like where I am..) it's far less,   Imagine what the figures would be if, say only 5 percent were tested, or people who have to work in the public now, or people with symptoms..in other words, people who really should be tested.

There was a 96 page book on preparation for a pandemic given to the trump admin when he showed up (everything that's happened, they predicted)...they tossed it aside just like every bit of science/intelligence based information that came their way.   No amount of blaming WHO, the press, Clintons, China, Congress can erase the crystal clear picture of the deliberate ignorance, lies and apathy that has escalated this crisis...the saddest words will be 'it didn't have to happen'.

I stopped watching any part of the briefings when Trump or his stooge Pence were speaking.  I applaud CNN for their wise judgement of not broadcasting political propaganda as a "briefing."

Also, my local TV stations in the heart of Trump country no longer preempt their newscasts for Trump briefings.  They might broadcast them on one of their other OTA stations.

Insiders suggest that Trump may be losing interest in these briefings in any event.  They were never meant to inform the public but quite the opposite.  They were designed to mislead the public and he treated them like a campaign event.  The whole thing is beyond evil.  This has been the man's nature all along.   If he were running Russia he would be more ruthless than Putin.

I spoke with the Postmaster General again today. She could not have been more clear: The Postal Service will collapse without urgent intervention, and it will happen soon. We’ve pleaded with the White House to help.
@realDonaldTrump personally directed his staff not to do so.
