Coronavirus Epidemic

Satire from 2014 during Ebola.  It is interesting that Fox and CNN News were alarmists during this outbreak.   Obama was in office.

Man Infected with Ebola Misinformation Through Casual Contact With Cable News

CANTON, OH (The Borowitz Report)—An Ohio man has become infected with misinformation about the Ebola virus through casual contact with cable news, the Centers for Disease Control has confirmed.

Tracy Klugian, thirty-one, briefly came into contact with alarmist Ebola hearsay during a visit to the Akron-Canton airport, where a CNN report about Ebola was showing on one of the televisions in the airport bar. “Mr. Klugian is believed to have been exposed to cable news for no more than ten minutes, but long enough to become infected,” a spokesman for the C.D.C. said. “Within an hour, he was showing signs of believing that an Ebola outbreak in the United States was inevitable and unstoppable.”

Once Klugian’s condition was apparent, the Ohio man was rushed to a public library and given a seventh-grade biology textbook, at which point he “started to stabilize,” the spokesman said.

But others exposed to the widening epidemic of Ebola misinformation may not be so lucky. “A man in Oklahoma was exposed to Elisabeth Hasselbeck on Fox for over three minutes,” the C.D.C. spokesman said gravely. “We hope we’re not too late.”

Some Fear Ebola Outbreak Could Make Nation Turn to Science

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report)—There is a deep-seated fear among some Americans that an Ebola outbreak could make the country turn to science.

In interviews conducted across the nation, leading anti-science activists expressed their concern that the American people, wracked with anxiety over the possible spread of the virus, might desperately look to science to save the day.

"It's a very human reaction," said Harland Dorrinson, a prominent anti-science activist from Springfield, Missouri. "If you put them under enough stress, perfectly rational people will panic and start believing in science."

Additionally, he worries about a "slippery slope" situation, "in which a belief in science leads to a belief in math, which in turn fosters a dangerous dependence on facts."

At the end of the day, though, Dorrinson hopes that such a doomsday scenario will not come to pass. "Time and time again through history, Americans have been exposed to science and refused to accept it," he said. "I pray that this time will be no different."

What about the 1829–1833 Pacific Northwest malaria epidemic that killed 150,000 in the Pacific northwest ALONE!!!  Lincoln contracted it in 1830 and 1835.

There was the 1861–1865 United States typhoid fever epidemic which killed 80,000.

Take into consideration the FAR SMALLER  population of the United States during the time

Equating the conditions in the 1800s to now is ludicrous.  Dysentery was a major cause of death then, a simple cut could be fatal.

You would assume that in a time where we have access to safe food, water, control of diseases like cholera or typhoid and science that couldn't be dreamed of then, we would do infinitely better.  In a time where no one can honestly claim ignorance, it must be that they choose it.  In the 1830s, they didnt have that choice.  If we have advanced at all, we should expect better (I'm talking preparedness, not miracle cures) and if the experts were taken seriously early, we'd have it.

In that case Ken Burns equating / comparing this to the Civil War and the Great Depression is just as ludicrous.

No, it's not. He's talking about the emotional, psychological and self-esteem loss for Americans in terms of the crisis and not just in terms of the economy or the technology.

Also the perspective can be  governmental -- these crisis were so grave that any one of them  could  have put an end to the Republic .

There's nothing magical about our Republic or representative democracy. It's only as good as the people who  participate.

The pandemic along with all the corruption in the trump Administration is a lot for any Republic to handle.

The French have been through six republics-- right now they're on the sixth one.

The United States has been fortunate in the past.

But the magnitude of the current crisis is nothing to laugh at or deflect.

The United States is currently in a very grave situation and it's not going to improve overnight.

I've got to say that an ounce of prevention would have been a lot better for the nation's Public Health and economy rather than  any pound of a cure.

Federal records show OSHA worked for six years to create new rules to prepare for an airborne infectious disease pandemic. The Obama White House formally added it to a list of regulations to be implemented in 2017. Then President Trump took office.

Just so we're clear, the president and his advisers are falsely denouncing nonexistent social media censorship to justify a legally baseless executive order at a time when everyone else is talking about the fact that the coronavirus has killed more than 100,000 Americans.

61,270
Estimated U.S. COVID-19 Deaths Due To POTUS Inaction
In January 2020, the Trump administration was advised that immediate action was required to stop the spread of COVID-19. According to NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci, “there was a lot of pushback” to this advice. President Trump declined to act until March 16th. Experts estimate that, had mitigation measures been implemented one week earlier, 60% of American COVID-19 deaths would have been avoided. (For further reading, click here).

That looks like some border patrol agents don't have a lot of respect for scientific evidence.

BREAKING: Trump just said he will no longer let America work with the World Health Organization. We need them, whether Trump likes it or not. All this will do is make more Americans sick, leading to more American deaths. It's like Trump is trying to kill Americans. For real. Sad.

In trying to scapegoat China and the World Health Organization for his own lack of action in protecting the United States from the pandemic, trump is endangering people everywhere, of course including Americans, by cutting off aid to The WHO.
