Supreme Court Blocks Curbside Voting In Alabama,

An Option During Pandemic

"........Dissenting from the high court's action were Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan.

Writing for the three, Sotomayor noted that John Merrill, the Alabama secretary of state, "does not meaningfully dispute that the plaintiffs have disabilities, that COVID-19 is disproportionately likely to be fatal to these plaintiffs, and that traditional-in-person voting will meaningfully increase their risk of exposure."

Moreover, said Sotomayor, in-person voting is considerably easier than voting by mail in Alabama. At the polls, voters with disabilities receive assistance from poll workers; they need no witnesses, notaries, or copies of their photo IDs, as Alabama law requires for absentee ballots, and they know their ballots will not arrive too late to be counted.

In addition, she noted, curbside voting has been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the pandemic, and the Justice Department has approved it as well as a way to prevent violations of the ADA..........

Not a very good report by NPR.  Lot on the dissenters, but nothing on why the majority favored letting AL Sec. of State determine whether or not to permit curbside voting.  Has AL ever had curbside voting?

As I said on another thread, Supreme Court usually defers to states on voting/election issues unless a violation of federal law.

"IL. Governor J.B. Pritzker announced mitigation efforts for several areas in the state, including Chicago, and as residents can imagine, the decision to shut down indoor dining is being met with anger from business owners already suffering since the first round of restrictions in March. ......

“We make four to six pennies on a dollar,” said the CFO of Phil Stafani Restaurants, Steven Hartenstein. “How in the world can we survive?”

Hartenstein says customers and employees were just starting to trust in the safe operations of restaurants but will be forced to furlough employees again.........

He says the government must come up with a financial package to help the restaurant industry survive.

“I feel like the restaurant industry has been singled out without fact and it’s just not fair,” said Hartenstein.

With Chicago averaging more than 900 coronavirus cases per day, Pritzker defended his decision on Wednesday, even as Chicago’s mayor initially disagreed with his decision.

“They’ve been struggling since March. They are the industry that’s been most impacted,” said Mayor Lori Lightfoot........

According to WSAZ news Trick or Treating in Kanawha  county was normal, same numbers as last year.  In my area had a couple of outdoor Halloween parties including fireworks.

Only a few towns cancelled Trick or Treating i.e. Kermit, WV.

The city not only encouraged but participated in Halloween.  For only time in 30 years, we did not participate.  Did look out the window several times to observe.  No masks and no social distancing and a couple of thousand people (or more) walking the street.  Saw the chief of police and couple of officers walking the street.  No masks, even though got close to people and spoke to them.

This area of S.C. has the highest increase in positive cases right now.  It is also the most Republican area of the state.

Indiana National Guard deploys to state’s long-term care facilities-

:.......The National Guard will eventually provide support to the state’s 534 long-term care facilities over the next three weeks. The operation involves 1,350 Guardsmen.

Troops will assist with testing and reporting test results for coronavirus cases. They’ll also provide health screenings for employees and make sure infection control practices are being followed.

Hoosiers in long-term care facilities are among the state’s most vulnerable residents. Approximately 58% of COVID-19 deaths occurred in such facilities, where residents are often at a higher risk of complications from COVID-19.

According to the National Guard, troops will receive training from Probari, a company working with the Indiana State Department of Health to teach front-line workers about infection control.

Guardsmen will be tested for COVID-19 before deployment, with testing and health monitoring continuing regularly.........
