Neville Brand was an Army Staff Sergeant who fought at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded a Silver Star for heroism and a Purple Heart for being wounded as the war was nearing its end.

His list of decorations also includes:

Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Ribbon, the European/African/Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Battle Stars, one Overseas Service Bar, one Service Stripe, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.

Hollywood press agents tagged him with being the 2nd, 3rd, 4th highest decorated soldier to hype a movie. Brand admitted that this ranking was false but that "he was up there".
