New person here !

Recommended Posts

Didn't see a place for intros so just a little about myself. I'm Bruce, from the New England area, and of course I am a huge movie fan. I can't remember when I didn't like movies. But I do know when we lost our cable and my beloved TCM I was lost. I know that sounds dramatic, but I found I liked the older movies and stars, it just wasn't the same. luckily within the last year we got back TCM, matter of fact I made sure before that it was available.

There is not enough room here for all the films I like, but I do know I really like to find films I haven' seen yet. just a few favorite actors and actresses are in no particular order: James Stewart, Gregory Peck, Shirley Mclaine,King of Cool Steve McQueen,Paul Newman,Susan Hayward,Tom Hanks and the list could go on for a long long time.

Favorite Films: Jane Eyre(1943), Mister Roberts(funny but so sad at the same time), War Movies ,Westerns, anything with Tom Hanks or Jimmy Stewart, All John Wayne films, also anything with Gene Kelly, lately musicals seem to interest me as well. Also epics such as Ben Hur, or Ten Commandments, Forbidden Planet, War of the Worlds(1953) maybe all Science Fiction :)

Some people like watching movies, I like to think I take that to a completely new level, but thats just me being me !

Greetings and Solicitations!

It is nice to see that some of your tastes are the same as mine! It is sad to say that you are far afield also in some things.

This is mostly a nice place while you remain on the topic of movies. I will caution you to avoid being drawn into discussions or even offering a generalized opinion on the following subjects until you have been a denizen of these moors for a considerable while:

1) How old does a movie have to be before it can be considered a classic?

2) How old does a movie have to be before TCM should air it?

3) Why does TCM not air Hot Spell (1958)?

Welcome!

This thread makes me realize that we've never had a "meet and greet" area on this site.

I guess we just get to know each other through the day-to-day postings.

Welcome.  Looking forward to see your posts. I love Mr. Roberts for many reasons.  My father served in WWII on a destroyer escort (I believe Mr. Roberts served on a supply ship).

For old movies, that is.

(...welcome...hope to read some of your thoughts on classic films very soon...well, that is unless I've scared ya off here, anyway)  ;)

Hi Bsmooth! Nice to meet you. Some of the favorite people you listed are also some of my own personal favorites... I have to say Jimmy  Stewart is high up there for me as well. I look forward to reading whatever you choose to post on here :)

I think a “Meet and Greet” sticky post would be a great addition to the site.

I'll join in the welcoming committee.  I too, have no particular "favorites" as to genre.  I like movies from all of 'em. However....

I DID notice you didn't separate FORBIDDEN PLANET and WAR OF THE WORLDS from your sentence mentioning epics.  ;)  But I got your drift.  One hint though....

These boards are mostly for fun and entertainment.(at least for me) and it helps if one doesn't take themselves too seriously. As the maxim goes..... "Taking yourself too seriously leaves you the only one doing so."  B)

Like DARGO, I too, like to joke around a bit.  And someday hope to work my way up to Darg's level.  ;)  So-------

HOP IN!  The water's fine!  :)

My favorite actors and actresses in no particular order (well except for the first two): Lucille Ball, Errol Flynn, Gene Kelly, Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, Natalie Wood, Barbara Stanwyck, William Holden, William Powell, Eleanor Parker, Eleanor Powell, Rita Hayworth, Sandra Dee... and so many more.

My favorite movie of all time is The Long, Long Trailer (1954) with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.  I have probably seen it over 100 times (no exaggeration).  After that, my favorites are (in no particular order): Casablanca, Singin' in the Rain, Some Like it Hot, Meet Me in St. Louis, Gilda, Leave Her to Heaven, Gentleman Jim, Picnic, Gidget, Rebel Without a Cause,... the list goes on.  I'm pretty open to most genres, except I am not the biggest fan of horror, westerns, war movies, and science fiction.  However, there are always exceptions.  I like the James Whale horror classics.  I also loved the original The Day the Earth Stood Still with Michael Rennie.  But as a rule, I mostly watch: 50s-60s teen beach movies, comedies, musicals (mostly the all-dancing ones.  The all singing ones with no dancing aren't usually as exciting for me), film noir, thrillers, "weepies," overly-wrought melodrama...
