Doppelgangers or Twins in Films

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about movies with twins or doppelgangers (lookalikes).  For example, Bette Davis played twins in Dead Ringer.  Ronald Coleman played both roles in The Prisoner of Zenda (two different characters).  However, in my favorite version of A Tale of Two Cities, he plays Sidney Carton (sp?) and not the man he resembles (I've seen versions where the same actor played both parts (Charles Darnay (sp?)?).  There are many films that have good and evil twins.  I do not know if they ever did a film adaptation of Brat Farrar (Josephine Tey).  There was a PBS/TV version.  This also involves someone who resembles a supposedly dead family member (don't want to give away plot).

Asking for other examples and what people think about films.

Well by now, you should be familiar with what most of us think about films.  ;)

But to add to the topic, off the top there's LEE MARVIN's dual role in CAT BALLOU('65)

Don Ameche plays both a ne'er-do-well  entertainer and his wealthy aristocrat doppelganger in: That Night in Rio (1941).

Oliver and James Phelps play twins George and Fred Weasley in Harry Potter movies. Twins playing twins might normally not be of interest but I have read that they often switched roles during filming and that only people who know them well can tell which is playing which in each scene.

Roberto Benigni as his pre-Life is Beautiful Chaplin-shlub and his mistaken-identity Sicilian gangster in Johnny Stecchino (1991).

(And his later tribute to Charlie Chaplin as clown and conqueror from The Great Dictator (1940).)

The late Ian Holm as Napoleon and his lazy lookalike decoy in The Emperor's New Clothes (2001)

Leo DiCaprio as a more smoldering/troubled teen Louis-Philippe in the 1998 The Man in the Iron Mask.

And, of course, Jack Lemmon as Professor Fate and Crown Prince Frederick in The Great Race (1965).

Don't think anyone has yet mentioned the great Conrad Veidt in the dual roles of a loyal American immigrant (left) and his twin brother who's a Nazi official/spy (right) in 1942's Nazi Agent...
