First, hello, this is my maiden visit to the forums. I had searched and found nothing on the actor/author/playwrite Robert Shaw (more than Quint in Jaws) I am trying to find a DVD of a movie he did in the sixties called The Luck of Ginger Coffey. Having seen Jim Sheridan's In America this year I had a memory of seeing Ginger Coffey years ago. Sorry to be so wordy. Trouble finding the Video...I have the book. Just remembered how good he was and how young (51) he died.

I DID find it too at Amazon, but I am number 5 on the waiting list. They can not give me any delivery date. I just think that with the critical success of Jim Sheridan's In America it would be a good time to revisit Ginger Coffey. I too got critical acclaim but not much play as it was Canadian. It is truly one of Robert Shaw's best pieces. No shark, no Nazi's, now suit of armour, just his then wife Mary Ure. The book is wonderful too. It is about the struggle of in this case Irish immigrants. As I said, the book was good, and poor Shaw, didn't get a chance to play someone close to himself. He was better than just Quint. Actually saw him on stage in New York once.

Thank you for responding. I find these boards a little quirky and have not yet mastered the posting and checking techniques.

Well, I don't know what in the....is the problem of late with this website???-(& I see others are having same problems THANKS GUYS FOR SENDING ALL INTO CYBERSPACE, YET AGAIN!!! GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!!!) I just wanted to reply to this new guy & post-(If it's ever possible anymore?) On the late fellow Irishman Robert Shaw-(1927-78) Of whom sadly & literally dropped dead on the Dublin bridge of a heart attack, at only age 50! Like another fellow Irishman, though strangely born in Tasmania: errol Flynn-(1909-59) both were very, very, heavy boozers & both died of same heart problem at 50. Flynn, actually suffered his 1st heart attack during '42's "Gentleman Jim" & Shaw, was so blitzed during the legendary scene at the table in "Jaws"-(& not many movies scare me, but this 1 still does!) The crew literally had to carry Mr. Shaw into the rm. for that sequence, due to his drunkenness? However, he then proceeded to ad-lib the "Indianapolis" story. He deserved another OSCAR nom. for that role. & as in the film. He literally harrassed *Dreyfuss to the pt. the then 27yr. old actor was actually scared. Just like "Quint" & "Hooper" However, he later lightened up a wee-bit & kinda' liked him. Many 4-get he also played what may be Bond's greatest villian in '63's "From Russia With Love"-(Ironically, both he & *Connery started out as bodybuilder(s) His 1 ACADEMY shot & in all fairness he deserved to win! Was for '66's *"A Man for All Seasons" However, *Matthau-(wonderful as he was) won Best S. Actor for "F. Cookie" & he was in it as much as *Lemmon? Where is, Shaw virtually gave a cameo performance in the former epic. But, that is the ACADEMY & politics. I musta' seen '74's "T. of Pelham 0ne Two Three," over 20 times. Another, great yet, subdued-(for Shaw) performance.

Great topic & If you get to see this WELCOME!

Thanks for the Shaw stories. I too think he was under rated and under appreciated and had to take crap roles pay the English, Irish and American taxes. Just watched Taking Pelham last night..Matthau? nice but no prize. Saw Shaw once on stage...couldn't have been drunk then...

And...Flynn...my first movie crush when I was a teen.
