Trump's new Postal Service?

Lawmakers aim to dissolve 'draconian' law that placed heavy financial burden on Postal Service

The financial requirement has created a major economic drag on the Postal Service, causing it to appear to fall billions of dollars further into debt each year.

............The issue stems from a 2006 law that required the Postal Service to create a $72 billion fund that would pay for its employees' retirement health benefits for more than 50 years into the future. This is not required by any other federal agency.

The "USPS Fairness Act," introduced by Democrats and Republicans in both chambers, would do away with the requirement and comes as some lawmakers and the biggest Postal Service union have called for President Joe Biden to quickly install new leadership in the federal agency. ...........

Englewood Residents Venture to Post Office in Cold After Weeks of No Mail Delivery

One resident told NBC 5 he hasn't received mail since Jan. 26

........

The full statement from Tim Norman, USPS spokesman for the Chicago District, is below:

"We apologize for the disruption in service at the Post Office Station located at 6559 S. Ashland. We have experienced staff shortages at this location and are currently using available resources to match the workload created by the impacts of the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This includes bringing in extra resources at this location. We have also been challenged by the recent accumulation of snow in our region and ask customers to keep the approaches to their mailboxes clear of ice and snow.  We appreciate the patience of our customers and the efforts of employees as conditions change on a day-to-day basis..........

An alternative is for Biden to give the board an opportunity to fire DeJoy.  If they don't, then fire them for cause.

Election of Democratic Chair Portends Change at Post Office

Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., a New Jersey Democrat, wants Biden to fire the entire Postal Service Board of Governors for what he called dereliction of duty

".........Only the board can fire the postmaster general, a protection put in place to insulate the independent agency from politics. While Biden cannot fire DeJoy, the president can use appointments to reshape the board that hires and fires the postmaster general. If he fills three current vacancies, then Democrats would have a majority on the nine-member panel. The six who currently comprise the board are Trump appointees.

Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union, said Biden needs to fill the vacancies with choices that reflect greater diversity and fewer links to “the world of finance and banks.”

“It is imperative that the Biden administration fill these openings promptly so that we can right this ship that has gone off course,” he said.........

US mail will 'get slower and more expensive': Postmaster General Louis DeJoy 'plans to eliminate two-day first-class delivery and hike postage rates' as USPS struggles with billions in losses

DeJoy has discussed eliminating first-class mail designated for delivery in two days, and instead make all first-class mail targeted for a three- to five-day delivery window, people briefed on it said.

About damn time!  Get it done ASAP and fire DeJoy.

Incidentally in yesterday's testimony, DeJoy told Congress that he will be around a long time -"get used to it."

This should be at the top of Biden's to do list.  Pack the board of governors ASAP and have them fire DeJoy.  In fact, he should be pressuring the current board to fire DeJoy.
