Something doesn't smell right here;    if 88% of the children in the USA really need some type of Federal government funding,   there is a much larger issue here as it relates to the overall US economic system.

The tax laws changed about 3 years ago.  Before, if you had dependent children, you received an exemption for each one (around $4K per person claimed).   The deductions reduced your taxable income.

Starting in 2018, Congress changed the law so that instead of a deduction, you receive a tax credit.  This was part of the Trump tax overhaul.  They removed the dependent deductions while simultaneously upping the standard deduction.  This meant many folks would no longer file a "long form" with Schedule A for itemized deductions.  To offset the potential loss of deductions, they added the child credit, to try to achieve similar results as before.

Still confused about the payments going to 88% of children in America.  Actually this is money going to the parent(s) of 88% of children in America.

This does not make sense at all and seems far greater than anything that has been done before re: exemptions and tax credits.  This is a direct transfer of money to selected parents from other taxpayers.  The federal, state and local governments already spend vast amounts of money on "children."

These payments are an advance on folks' 2021 federal taxes.  If they take the payments this year, they won't get the credit on next year's taxes.

The credits have been part of the tax code since 2018.  The advance payment, and the temporary bump to $3K were added due to the pandemic.  It reverts back to the old rules in 2022.

And the reason most , but not all, families get the credit is that there is an income limit phase out, starting at $150K for joint filers.  Above that AGI, the credit starts to be stepped down

'Democracy is in peril, at home and around the world': Biden calls for 'respect' and 'decency' to protect the 'beating heart of America' in Memorial Day speech at Arlington's Tomb of the Unknown

President Joe Biden honored the nation's war dead on Memorial Day by taking part in a solemn ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery where he said Americans have long fought for 'rule of the people.' 'Democracy itself is in peril – here at home and around the world,' Biden said. 'A struggle for democracy is taking place around the world,' Biden said. 'Democracy means the rule of the people. The rule of the people. Not the rule of monarchs. Not the rule of the money,' he continued. He called the nation's travails a 'struggle for the soul of America itself' – a recurring theme of his campaign and administration. And he called for 'truth, founded on facts, not propaganda.' 'Empathy is the fuel of democracy,' Biden said, at times weaving in remarks that alluded to political clashes. He referenced the recent tumultuous times – which have featured a violent riot inside the Capitol, and a vote in the Senate Friday where a bipartisan to investigate Jan. 6th failed to advance. Early Monday, Democrats in the Texas legislature walked out to prevent a vote on new election restrictions. And within days, Biden will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose actions in Ukraine kicked off a years-long standoff with the U.S. 'The soul of America is animated by the perennial battle between our worst instincts, which we’ve seen of late and our better angels. Between "me first," and "we the people." Between greed and generosity,' Biden said. Between 'cruelty and kindness, captivity and freedom.' Biden was joined by Vice President Kamala Harris as they attended the traditional wreath-laying ceremony Monday. 'We gathered at this sacred case in this solemn hour engaged in the most fundamental of undertakings: the right of remembrance. To remember those who gave their all in the service of America and the service of freedom and the service of justice,' Biden said in re

The problem for the conservative-attack industry: when you promise exciting revelations about cannibal pedophiles, urban race war, and Jewish space lasers - and instead deliver "Joe Biden isn't as spry as he used to be" - obviously your target market will feel a certain let-down

This is true about Joe Biden,  but it isn't about Harris;  this is why Fox and the hacks there have shifted a lot of the focus on Harris;   Expect to see many anti-Harris books coming out and why Joe shifted tactics on immigration by sending Blinken down south to work with these countries before Harris;  Harris is still planning on going;   I think Joe will reduce her role related to immigration more and more.      While it is unfair to attack Harris before she even does anything The Economist covered this related to the Dem Presidential primary;    Harris did poorly with people-of-color and her comment to Joe of "you're not a racist BUT,,,",    was a real loser with most in that community.

Harris needs to gain some creed with main street Dems in order for Joe to get much value out of her.

6 months in, Biden’s critics still go after his brain. I only care about his heart

| Will Bunch

Republicans fumbling for a Biden attack keep falling back on "cognitive decline."

We should watch what POTUS does, not what he says.

"............The last couple of days have been a good microcosm of what a functioning presidency with a vision for where the nation ought to be headed should look like. On Friday, Biden signed a sweeping executive order with the broad goal of increasing competition across a wide range of business sectors from Silicon Valley to Big Pharma — another sign that his team has a real critique of late-stage capitalism and is thinking of ways to make life better for consumers and rank-and-file workers. Hours later, his administration canceled the student debts — worth more than $55 million — of 1,800 people scammed by yet another fraudulent for-profit university. It was a reminder of something that had been easy to forget for four years, that good government can solve problems.

Big picture, I’ve been most impressed with the way that Biden — showing there can be good aspects to a “career politician,” if he’s willing to understand his voters’ current problems and adapt — has accepted the need to tackle the gross unfairness and inequity in modern America, from economics to race and gender.

What’s more, the president has been highly focused on hiring smart people with real ideas on how to make this happen. None of the skilled folks on Team Biden are going to accidentally bomb Libya just because their boss misspoke, which is why the GOP/Fox obsession with Biden’s mental acuity is such a red herring.............

As a card carrying liberal Democrat I still have concerns about this one.  If we just had treasury send checks to everyone in the poverty brackets, we could cut it by 100% - but at what cost.  Eventually all these bills will come due.
