Greetings Cinephiles!

I am looking for a b&w movie I saw in the late-60s to early-70s.  I think the movie was made between the mid-1940s to late-1950s.  The movie was about a criminal and his girlfriend.  They both end up going straight, but only after he has had plastic surgery to change his appearance.  He becomes a surgeon and she becomes a surgical nurse.  He knows who she was/is, but she does not know who he was/is, and she falls in love with him.  Does this movie sound familiar to anyone? The movie is not Man in the Dark, The Man Who Returned to Life, nor The Man Who Lived Twice, at least to the best of my memory.  The only scene I remember is when they are both in the operating theater and, during the operation, they lock eyes.  I think at that moment either she realizes who he is and/or realizes that she loves him.  Thank you for helping!
