Over and out - cancelling streaming TCM

Recommended Posts

I've been an avid watcher of TCM since the beginning.  The recent change to show more modern era films and questionable content has pretty much ended my interest in TCM.  What happened to Joan Crawford and Jean Harlow films?  Clark Gable or Randolph Scott?  Alec Guinness anyone?  How about more silent films?  Nope, films from 2006 are a better choice.  Ugh.

The constant showing of the Blackface mini - over and over and over.  I get it, white people put black makeup on and did caricature of black people.  I"m sorry they did that to you!   Women make movies.  REALLY?  We weren't aware of that already?  Lets devote an entire month to poorly received unknown foreign films made by women.  Oh wait, womyn.   Today I thought I was on the wrong channel.  Color film with lesbians making out.  Okay, am did I fall into the Showtime channel?

And no matter what you do, you cannot make these hosts likable.  Pumped them all up with fillers and they're STILL horrible.  Other than Eddie Muller, it's a cavalcade of bad makeup and loud costumes.

Good riddance.  The Woke Crowd ruin another past time!

Aaaah, the "old tried and true" is always so comforting for some, isn't it.

Well folks and as for ME, I'll never ever understand people who resist broadening their horizons at least A LITTLE FREAKIN' BIT OCCASIONALY!

(...nope, 68 years on this freakin' planet, and I'll STILL never understand THAT!!!)

Btw, ya know who Martha reminds me of here?

The old bitty who the other day I parked my motorcycle in front of on the street in Old Town Cottonwood, Arizona.

I gave the old bitty at least EIGHT damn feet between her car and my motorcycle. Nope, not close to her AT ALL and PLENTY of room for her to pull out into the street when she wanted to leave.

BUT, evidently THAT wasn't enough room for the old bitty! NOOO, 'cause as I dismounted my motorcycle and took off my helmet (I always wear a helmet ya know, and 'cause only a FOOL rides a motorcycle without one) she rolled down her window and said, "That was very rude of you to park so close".

And so MY reply BACK to the old bitty was, "WHAT?! Look lady, I gave you PLENTY of room to pull your car out, AND if you're THAT damn an incompetent driver, then the state of Arizona should REALLY consider revoking your driver's license!"

She then pulled away with a little scowl on her face, AND of course probably thinking I WAS the "rude one" 'tween the two of us for the rest of her day. Although sure, I suppose I could have handed that a little more "diplomatically".

(...aaah, but then again, YOU how those damn motorcyclists are, don't YA?!!!)

LOL

Bye!

Meanwhile, while the OP is sitting around crying about having to learn about  blackface in film or seeing women making out or what have you... my state is on fire and burning down.  There is a fire they're trying  to contain that is 9 miles from my house. Entire communities of people have lost their homes  or are sitting in an evacuation center at the fairgrounds hoping that their home is still standing.

I could not care less about what TCM is or is not showing at this point.

If someone needs to see Jean Harlow that badly, buy some of her movies.

Money always talks. And it is certainly what fuels the economy in a capitalistic country.

There comes a time when any service or product, which is produced to make money, has to think about widening their target audience and their marketing base.

I'm sure they hope to keep the people they already have, but New Blood brings in new money and more money and that's the name of the game.

Excluding people that you don't agree with or who have an exceedingly more diverse and open taste than you --

is not necessarily a good marketing strategy in a capitalistic society.

Show me the money.:D

Well Rich, then maybe consider typing into your porn search something OTHER than "VINTAGE lesbian scenes"!

(...those do tend to be in B&W primarily, ya know)

Not a bad Lloyd Bridges impression I suppose, MCOH.

(...but now, how's your Leslie Nielsen or Bob Stack?...or Peter Graves for that matter)

I'm not scolding but I winced at your references. I once used the term "old battle-ax" in a post and I was read off the page with vitriol. I didn't call anybody that, mind you, she was in a movie. Fair game, right? Not to my executioner and ever defender of the rights and respect of women. Yeah, that's how she saw it. What the equivalent term for a guy. Geezer is too tame.

Hmmmm...how about "Old F*rt"??? I'd say 9 times out of ten when someone ascribes THIS term to someone, they're being gender specific to a male.

That's how I'll self-describe quite often anyway, and as I'm sure you've seen me do a time or two around here, right laffite?! ;)

(...But EVEN as much of an "Old F*rt" as I am, I STILL take GREAT pride in being a HELL of lot more open-freakin'-minded than our departing Martha here appears to be, anyway!!!)

Okay okay! So let's hear YOUR impression of Richard Burton now!

(...MCOH already has first dibs on Bridges, Nielsen, Stack and Graves, ya know)  ;)

I'll never forget the first time I saw Blanche Yurka and Edna May Oliver rolling over on the floor together in A Tale of Two Cities. It changed my life forever.

And thus the very reason that to this day, YOUR porn search always includes the word "mature" instead of "vintage" like Rich's does, right Tom???  ;)

(...hey, remember, I DIDN'T bring this stuff up here!)

I really liked the concert films. I like the Women in Film series. I'm not wild about Mark Cousins' narrative style, but I like the rare films that have been showing with the documentary. And I really like the Blackface short. It's one of the best shorts that TCM has done as an original production in years. And I'll be 63 in January.  Also, TCM, from the beginning, was never intended to be the "old movie" channel. Their mission was to show classic films from all eras.

If I have to pick a favorite decade for films, it would probably be the 1930s. I'm still amazed how many movies from that period, that I've never heard of, crop up on TCM.  There are plenty of time slots in 24 hour programming, and plenty of time to showcase old and classic films as well as special thematic series focusing on films from later periods.

It was like a fever coming over me after I saw that film, Dargo. I used to go to seedy little stores in run down parts of town and ask the clerks in a whisper if they had any Edna May Oliver films. They would invariably answer "Who?" and then tell me they had some dumb sounding item like "Betty Bonanza Does The World". So then I would ask them, "How about Blanche Yurka?" again in a sweaty whisper. Same kind of reply.

One day I was in a store and saw a COLOUR film (!!!) on sale with Edna May Oliver, Drums Along the Mohawk. I eagerly bought it and hurriedly carried it home in a brown paper bag. Humphhh! Hottest thing in that was a flaming arrow!

So my elusive search for Edna May (and Blanche) films goes on. Well, you know what they say, good to have a hobby.

No, 68 year old James Coburn lookalike, with a snarky Groucho delivery, to be exact.

Just read the OP's comments. Gosh, how horrible it must be to end up so miserable and so let down by a movie channel.

I feel sorry that TCM has disappointed someone so much. It's just unreal.

JAMES COBURN!  Well, I hope you're not flattering yourself!

Nope, not really.

Besides there being a few cases in the past of my posting a pic of my visage on these boards (the first case as I recall being a pic of me taken with Stefanie Powers at the Sedona Film Festival around 7 years ago now) and then having others around here mentioning the resemblance, I also get this sort'a thing occasionally said to me by others in the real world, and not just in this virtual one.

(...and in the real world, the comment is also often made that I even sound like him when I talk)
