"The primary message which can be taken away from Soylent Green is that people need to be appreciative of their fellow human beings and the world around them.

People need to first watch out for their own and then for the environment they call home"

The message in the movie is about over population. It hit 4 billion  a year before it's released, today it's 7.5 billion and growing.

The reason the population today is fed (barely in some parts of the globe) is because of modern agriculture which uses man made chemicals / fertilizers and that takes POWER to do that.  Outside the production / application of said fertilizers, machines are used to plant, harvest, transport, can, store, supply to outlets.  What will happen if that is taken away i.e a Carrington Event CME which brings down EVERYTHING.`

It won't take the vastly over population plot in "Soylent Green" to bring civilization to it's knees.
