Can't you resin-impregnate polyester? 32 minutes ago, Sepiatone said: That could be what it was. But I'm not sure fiberglass could be considered a fabric, although you can make fabric out of it..... From Wikipedia: Fiberglass (American English), or fibreglass (Commonwealth English) is a common type of fiber-reinforced plastic using glass fiber. The fibers may be randomly arranged, flattened into a sheet (called a chopped strand mat), or woven into a fabric. and A suitable resin for combining the fiberglass with a plastic to produce a composite material was developed in 1936 by du Pont. As someone who has dealt with fiberglass, this is just my personal take on it: "Fiberglass" for a car, boat, chair surface, etc is polyester fabric laid down conforming to the surface (fiber) then epoxy resin is brushed or poured over to seal & turn rock hard (glass) I've seen fiberglass in fine fabric grade polyester and thick weave Kevlar-like polyester depending on the time period & application. Apparently there are several different grades & levels of polyesters & resins, some free-standing (like a chair) and some covering a wood or sheet metal base.
slaytonf
Thank you for confirming my speculation! So the fiber in fiberglass can be either glass fibers (or cloth), or polyester.
Sepiatone
We used to joke that before they were primered and painted all Corvettes were pink, just like that INSULATION they were made of! Sepiatone
