DALE ROBERTSON

I liked Mr Robertson in some non-wetern films: THE FARMER TAKES A WIFE  and CALL ME MR., both with Betty Grable, and in the anthology film O. HENRY'S FULL HOUSE opposite Richard Widmark.

I think I first saw Ms Bergen on TV in MURPHY BROWN, in which she was perfectly cast  (I love that show!)

She was also good in CARNAL KNOWLEDGE and THE WIND AND THE LION. I liked her role in MISS CONGENIALITY, as well.

Our eleventh child star (teen star) is

SAL MINEO

Screen Shot 2021-03-13 at 4.51.26 PM

He was 16 when he appeared in REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955), though he certainly looks younger:

Screen Shot 2021-03-13 at 4.49.42 PM

He was typecast as delinquents and played another one in THE YOUNG DON'T CRY (1957):

Screen Shot 2021-03-13 at 4.53.41 PM

He was always a memorable performer.

I thought Sal Mineo was fantastic in THE GENE KRUPA STORY. I also liked him in GIANT and again he was fantastic in EXODUS.  I think he would have transitioned into a busy character actor if he had not been killed so young.

Well he found roles on television in his later years, usually playing ethnic types (sometimes villains). One of his last screen appearances was on an episode of Columbo. But I agree, he should have been working more frequently.

I loved Bebe Daniels in the "Lonesome Luke" silent films she appeared in with Harrold Lloyd. I also thought she was great in COUNSELLOR AT LAW, RIO RITA and as the original Miss Wonderly in the 1931 version of THE MALTESE FALCON.

Did you know Ms Daniels was likely the first  screen "Dorothy" in the 1910 version of THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ? No screen credits survive, so it's not official, but it is generally regarded that it is indeed her.

At first I was going to include another precode actress, but I am now glad I chose Bebe Daniels. I didn't realize how far back her career went. She worked with most of the big male stars and has a unique on-screen persona.

We're starting the final week of the winter season. Don't know about everyone else's locations, but Arizona has had very cold wintery weather the past week. So even though spring is supposedly on its way, it doesn't feel like it!

I love everything  Danny Kaye has appeared in, but I can only watch one film per week or so. I think his energy starts to overwhelm me! 😄  Some of my favorites are the films he did with Vera-Ellen, Virginia Mayo and Steve Cochran (WONDER MAN, THE KID FROM BROOKLYN.) KNOCK ON WOOD is another favorite of mine, but absolutely THE COURT JESTER is my favorite. Everyone is terrific in it and so many hilarious scenes!  My favorite scene:

Ann Savage in the film DETOUR...Tell me she doesn't look like the kind of woman you can take home to Mother... : filmnoir

It's been awhile since I've seen the movie. Do we ever find out her motivation? Why she is the way she is...?

No, she was just one mean, nasty piece of work.

Probably based on some writer's ex-wife or producer's ex-wife who won a large alimony settlement! :)

She was definitely rememberable in DETOUR for being a B****, lol.

I would like to see KLONDIKE KATE, a Columbia film in which she also starred with Tom Neal.

Our twelfth character actor is

BARRY FITZGERALD

Fondly remembered for his work alongside Bing Crosby in GOING MY WAY (1944):

I first think of him as the wily police lieutenant in The Naked City (1948)

Naked City, The (1948) - Who Moved The Body? - Turner Classic Movies

Yes, that's another good role for him.

His Irish charm also worked well in westerns, like CALIFORNIA (1947) and SILVER CITY (1951).

March 17th was a good day to honor Barry Fitzgerald!

I liked his stubbornness in GOING MY WAY, his uncharacteristically abusive  role in THE SEA WOLF, and his buddy to the boxing coach in HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY. He was also good in AND THEN THERE WERE NONE and NONE BUT THE LONELY HEART. I think he is most memorable to me in THE QUIET MAN, though.

I loved Vera Miles' spunky Laurie in THE SEARCHERS. She was spunky again as the cook and object of Wayne's and Stewart's affections in THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE. I also liked her as Henry Fonda's wife in THE WRONG MAN, and of course as Janet Leigh's sister, Lila, in PSYCHO.
