NPR's Eric Deggans says it's time to throw out the rules when it comes to picking television's best shows. Show wasn't nominated? Who cares! Two winners in one category? Just proves the value of being open minded! That's what the DEGGYS are all about!

Last year, "Schitt's Creek" set a record by sweeping the major comedy categories at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

A year later, "The Crown" followed suit by winning the awards for Outstanding Drama Series, Directing (Peter Morgan), Writing (Morgan), Lead Actor (Josh O'Connor), Actress (Olivia Colman), Supporting Actor (Tobias Menzies) and Supporting Actress (Gillian Anderson).

It was the first Emmy win for Colman, who received a 2018 Academy Award for her performance as Britain's Queen Anne in "The Favourite." It was likely her last chance to win for her portrayal of the middle-aged Queen Elizabeth II of the U.K. "The Crown" will change cast members for its fifth and final season, with the veteran actress Imelda Staunton taking on the role of the older queen. Incidentally, Claire Foy, who won a 2018 Emmy for her version of Elizabeth, received a Guest Performance award last week for reprising the royal role.

Colman, who had lost three previous Emmy bids, was something of a surprise winner Sunday night. She competed in the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series category with co-star Emma Corrin, who had earned a lion's share of earlier awards for her portrayal of the queen's ill-fated daughter-in-law, Princess Diana.

O'Connor, Menzies and Anderson were rewarded for their portrayals of Prince Charles, Prince Phillip and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, respectively.

This year's Outstanding Comedy Series prize went to Apple +'s "Ted Lasso," which starred Jason Sudeikis as an American transplanted to the United Kingdom as a soccer coach. Sudeikis earned the Comedy Actor award; his co-stars Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham picked up supporting honors.

Honoring lost loved ones proved a common theme in #Emmys acceptance speeches.

Jean Smart dedicated her best actress in a comedy series award to her late husband, the actor Richard Gilliland. “I would not be here without him."
