TCM Programming Challenge #44 -- "Battle of the B's"

Recommended Posts

Stevomachino:  Welcome back to the challenge.  You have been truly missed.  What an incredibly clever schedule!  Love your wheelchair and harmonica themes, how you've handled the "B" challenges, particularly your 1944 GP, Mortimer Brewster (when I thought of characters for 1944 he was the first one I thought of  --  great minds, etc, etc. ) as well as the Inner Sanctum/Universal B's.  Dana Andrews is a super SOTM. "The long take" is a great salute as is "Akira & Orson Tackle Shakespeare."  Ed Wood and Jack Arnold have long deserved an "attaboy."

Super schedule.  Love it.

I love Mortimer Brewster as Guest programmer. That is hilarious. I love Dana ANdrews as SOTM, HG Wells, all the B movie stuff all over like Godzilla and Ed Wood, and interesting tributes like harmonica and wheelchairs. ROYGBIV was so brilliant. Especially love the National Park theme. I just went out to Joshua Tree and could swear John Wayne was around every corner.

I love that you and I both programmed Kurosawa's Shakespeare films--great minds think alike--but went the extra mile making it a whole month long tribute. I feel like THRONE OF BLOOD is the greatest movie version of MACBETH.

I saw THE BAD SLEEP WELL for the first time recently and love the twist on Hamlet. I don't even mean the setting which is the business world of what at the time was modern day Japan (boy does that fit perfectly). I loved what he did with the story (gonna use the Shakespeare character names for clarity--spoilers ahead!). First he made Ophelia and Laertes the children of Claudius instead, making it more heartbreaking when Claudius is evil. Second he started the story with Prince Hamlet's wedding to Ophelia, which is a business merger rather than a political one, things that still go on today. It hurts so much more to have Ophelia wronged by her legal husband. But the best change of all that really drives the narrative is that Claudius and crew kill "King Hamlet" without knowing there even is a Prince Hamlet. Claudius and crew spend most of the movie trying to figure out who is messing with them and why, with them slowly figuring out that King Hamlet actually had a son, etc. It makes it more of a mystery on their part, with the audience finding out nearer the beginning that he's doing it. Then in another twist Hamlet is actually Horatio--the guy who marries Ophelia is Hamlet using Horatio's good name to hide his identity. So brilliant! I highly recommend this movie even though I ruined a lot of it. :)

Young received his first Oscar nomination for Come Fill the Cup (1951) and won the Oscar for They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (1969). Silent Sunday Night features a classic swashbuckler starring Douglas Fairbanks. TCM Imports features two great Lino Ventura performances from 1969.

We pay tribute to her range with some of her best performances. During Primetime, we are fortunate to welcome Father O’Malley from Going My Way as our Guest Programmer. He has selected a variety of films featuring priests and nuns and hopes that everyone enjoys this special night of programming.

Tuesday
Our daytime theme takes us into the city of Berlin. All of our films either take place in or feature a scene in Berlin. From classic spy tales to an hysterical comedy, savor the excitement and tension that is Berlin. Primetime continues our Star of the Month tribute to the beautiful and radiant, Linda Darnell. Darnell was a great talent and her range is on full display tonight with a musical, a western, two dramas including her starring role in Forever Amber (1947), and a comedy.

Wednesday
Wednesday features a salute to the dynamic actress and beauty, Lee Remick. We have a day of films as diverse as the actress herself, including three films that have not aired on TCM for over 20 years! Our primetime lineup continues our month’s spotlight on the history of the New York Times Best Sellers list.

Thursday
Our daytime theme takes us Around the World with Orson Welles! In 1955, Welles created a short series for British television touring different countries including France, Spain, Austria, and England. We pay homage to Welles with a day of his performances with each film featuring footage from a different country. Primetime continues the beloved Bob’s Picks series, a popular programming block where Robert Osborne would share films that were new to TCM, underseen, had not been featured in primetime, or significant. Bob’s Picks always featured variety and we have something for everyone.

Friday
A full Friday filled with films from 20th Century Fox! Our morning kicks off with four films from Sol M. Wurtzel’s B unit. We then join the great detective, Charlie Chan, for four fun mysteries. The late afternoon concludes with three films from Ida Lupino at Fox, including two film noir gems. Our Friday primetime block continues the fun as we take a look at one of the screen’s most glamorous couples, Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney. Two of Fox’s most popular stars, they made three films together and we have them for you tonight. TCM Underground features one of the most promising young British actresses of the 1960s, Carol White.

Saturday
Join us for an all-day birthday tribute to the extraordinary, Joan Fontaine. Best remembered for her roles in two Alfred Hitchcock films, Fontaine could play the innocent woman better than anyone. Her filmography features a number of excellent performances and we are pleased to showcase many of her finest roles today. The Essentials this week features Richard Burton in one of his greatest performances as the titular character in Becket (1964). On Noir Alley, we have a TCM premiere of the Edward G. Robinson film noir Night Has a Thousand Eyes (1948). We conclude the week with two films featuring the legendary Lillian Gish.

Athos:  I am so loving this schedule.  "A Little Funny in the Head" is grand and I love your SOTM, Linda Darnell. (When is she going to get her SOTM month?) Sol Wurtzel's B Unit and Charlie Chan are among my all-time favorites as are Lee Remick and the incredible Marsha Hunt.  Father O'Malley is a wonderful GP and Orson Welles Around the World  and Berlin Stories are such clever programming segments.  Also love Ida Lupino at Fox and Tyrone Power & Gene Tierney.  Super, super job!

Great schedule, C.I.! Trudy Kockenlocker is such a great character as guest programmer. Lots of great stuff in here! Precode parade, Paramount in the 70s, and lotws of great stuff in here. VistaVision is my personal favorite of all the widescreen processes to stare at, and since it ends up being the widescreen shape everyone is doing these days, it's pretty prophetic.

Cinema International:  Love how you have spotlighted so many films from Paramount, 20th Century Fox and Universal in so many interesting ways.  I especially enjoyed your Pre-Code Parade,  Universal 1930's B's, the Ross Hunter Film Festival and your Bob's Pix. "Valley of the Dolls" as your "Essential" is inspired, especially when paired with "Peyton Place" on a Saturday night.  Glad to see Whoopi Goldberg getting a salute ("Soapdish" is a guilty pleasure of mine)  and you masterfully handled all 5 challenges.  The Vista Vision salute is fun, as is your clever GP, Trudy Kockenlocker.   Great job!
