And suspenseful. The guy in the storm chaser van, Mike, lost his feed once or twice, so the weather dude kept telling the control guy, Doug, "Keep refreshing Mike's feed, Doug, so we can be sure he's safe." Turns out Mike was just fine. Drove through a dead spot on 820 just west of 35. But for a while there, we just. Didn't. Know.

(And was also watched by 6 million more people than The 2021 Oscars....)

I honestly just went to IMDb to double check this, because I assumed you *had* to be making an error**. Nope you’re right Steven Frears did not get nominated for best director. Nor was the cinematography. 
 

That is a head scratcher for me. 
 

(i recently saw THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST and was very underwhelmed.)

In a Revisionist Oscars I could see the film sweeping the Top Five awards.

Yes, I would have nominated Malkovich as Best Actor;  I found his performance to be mesmerizing and revelatory.

DANGEROUS LIAISONS is also the VERY VERY VERY RARE instance of a truly mediocre book becoming a superb film.

The story is all there in the original French novel, but it is told ENTIRELY through letters from one character to another and everything is secondhand and, frankly,  it ALL comes off a bit like:

Dear M- (redacted)

Camp is fun. It gets cold at night. Last night we told ghost stories. Also I have decided to ensnare the daughter of M- De (redacted)- into a web of games and intrigue, which will ultimately destroy her father The Marquis.

Send more socks please.

I bought a copy right before a hurricane hit, got to page 200 and decided to watch the storm instead.

Roy, I had a friend who particularly liked Malkovich, saying that because Malkovich wasn't especially good-looking, he had to learn to be more manipulative, so the casting and the performance totally made sense.

(And yes, the "Lady Joker" comparisons to Promising Young Woman's cult of empowerment-fantasy female fans are thoroughly justified--Just TRY to point out any one of the movie's many imperfections, and face the cult-like wrath of the female equivalent of Crazed, Persecution-Complexed Angry DC Comics fans who will accuse you personally of everything from racism to Trump support to toxic rape culture...  😦

The problem with the Oscar films this year was that in spite of how important they thought they were, most were slight and a bit clammy. Nomadland and Sound of Metal were actually decent films, but both were overlong and a bit too low key. Not bad films, but definitely lacking a bit of pizzazz.

I watched the trailer for THE SOUND OF METAL and it looked

1. pretentious

and

2. depressing.

I can handle depressing movies and at a time for films like this, it was at least well-acted and mostly well done (which is more than can be said for some).; I feel the main problem with movies is that for so much of its existance, Hollywood did midbudget films that were fun and entertaining. And ther're mostly gone now, and many things are heavy-handed. The other week i saw an article in the New York Times saying how two of this year's supporting players were in the same film (Judas and the black Messiah) and they had pictures from another film with co-stars against each other from the 80s, Terms of Endearment. It was symbolic of a sense of how different praised films are now than they were in the 80s, when they weren't so fussy.

Again, the problems with allowing made for Amazon/HBO films this year was that we had a competition of films studios didn't WANT to show in theaters, even if they were open--Or were "envelope-pushing" race/gender/politically woke-targeted enough to keep up with HBO's "We show the movies others won't!" reputation, which has now spread to every other cable/streaming network.

We have enough problems most years with the slight, depressing, clammy, woke-skewed indie films that do play actual theaters.
