BRONXGIRL'S MOTHER, HENRY FONDA'S HIRSUTENESS, ETC.

Ha... Jackie, after seeing that clip that Bronxie posted, I am thinking that naming an old green station wagon after him was something of a disservice, ha. :-)

I SHOULD have picked a name better suited for that car, (like "Uncle Jed" or something.. ha) and saved Rudy's hallowed name for that day when I FINALLY got my dream car... a silver 1984 Mercury Cougar. ha. (at least that was my dream car when I was in my 20's anyway! ha.. but alas, that day never came as my budget did not allow, so that is how I ended up with "Baby".. he was an '83 Ford Escort instead, ha)

Hahahaha, "Al-van"

But my favorite is:

I remember how beautiful Jane Darwell looked photographed by Pappy as she's ruefully looking at herself in the mirror putting on earrings before the Joads have to leave their home. Don't tell me you're not as glamorous as Connie Bennett, or that you're not Riviera material. Of course you are! I can't speak for everyone, but I've decided to forego the chilly United Kingdom for the sunny and sophisticated delights of either the south of France or the Italian Riviera. These places are where my heart is, and I would LOVE to have us down there for a mini film fest. (maybe all-Valentino)

Thanks, metsie! I guess he was in denial, lol.

The more I uncover about Rudy, the more I want, HAVE to know -- he's gotten under my skin!

I HAVE TO FIND A PHOTO OF HIM WEARING GLASSES.

I realize this might be impossible.

I replied to your post re: that great Gilbert Roland article on Rudy, in case you didn't see it.

"He smiled, shook my hand, and I trembled". And this is GILBERT ROLAND! (at the time a teenager, but still....)

Amazing.

I'm so glad you liked the article, I thought it was terribly moving and revealing about both Valentino and Roland.

My favorite line:

>Valentino had dignity, wore elegant English clothes, made bow ties popular, drove fast cars, was a hard-riding horseman, and loved women. We imitated his graceful walk; grew sideburns, pomaded our hair a la Valentino. He grew a beard and it became fashionable. Barbers were alarmed, protested and begged him to shave it off. He introduced the platinum slave bracelet. We wore cheap imitations. He made the tango popular. *We danced with beautiful girls who called us - Latin lovers - a sobriquet we did not contradict.*

Bela played Roxor in CHANDU THE MAGICIAN, but I'm thinking Rudy would have been terrific. I'm trying to find Maven's favorite photo of him -- you posted it along with others in Rambles -- to give us some idea of how perfect he would have been as Roxor. Perhaps you could post it here? Thanks!

"He's looking right at you, Maven..."

Say, I didn't take his pomade. Though this picture is not quite flattering to him. I saw a young man on the train (Mexican descent if I'm not mistaken) who looked very much like John Drew Barrymore. Very handsome young man.

Now that you mention it, that looking-at-you photo does seem more Natacha-ized. I think he actually looks most handsome all "paled" up, like the picture below with his poor arm.

John doesn't have the old man's profile, does he? (is that Barbara Rush? Loved her in THE YOUNG PHILADELPHIANS. Heck, I love her in everything)

Another Rudy connection: doesn't this remind you of that "arty" photo of Valentino and Rambova?

Yes there is a Rudy-Winnie similarity. Yes, that is Barbara Rush. I'd know her anywhere. I saw her at the film festival. I was close enough to speak to her, but too shy to dare. I did take a picture of her. I'm not remembering how to post pix on the Board or I'd show it to you. I, too, am a big Barbara Rush fan.

And the chocolate shake I had at the Disney store. It took me two hours to finish it.

I think John Drew has a very classic profeeel.
