But I'd like to go back on that boat -- and become an expat with the beautiful villa like Mary Astor in DODSWORTH.

Dear Bronxgirl,

It is with pleasure that we, here at TCM Connection, have matched you with your perfect partner. Your soul mate, Mr. Porter Hall, will accompany you for this evening's festivities.

Wait till you see his socks!

Me too, over Kent Smith.

I was just reading that Rudy loved animals so much, he was often seen, at the start of his career, walking around with a lost puppy or kitten in his arms, making sure they got fed and were alright. Oh, Rooooody!

Also, that his speaking voice was "low and husky, and very much part of his charm". His accent was strong. One woman's account was that he introduced himself to her: "Pleas' (sic) to meet you", and she melted.

Mama mia!

Oh lordie Jackie, where do you find these great vids with more new Roooody photos?? The Little Tramp looks all pasty and positively.....girlish, lol, next to hunky olive-skinned, well-built Rudy. (as one YouTube poster commented, "It's an open and shut case")

Are you the python or the goat in your Porter Hall scenario?

Could any other actor in 1921 play this scene with equal parts tenderness, romantic ardor, and sheer sensuality, without being corny or artificial? Rudy has subtlety, believability, and a modern authenticity and edginess that is fascinating. He is sensitive, melancholy, passionate, yearning, I can't get enough of Valentino!

Wow, that photograph is a pefect example of his modern appeal/ All in black, and looking like a young Brando, Newman, Depp. (we can forgive the clenched fists -- after all, it WAS the teens or early twenties, lol)

I thought it looked very modern too.

That clip from Conquering Power was lovely, I have to go back and re-watch the movie.

Today I had a thought - if he had lived, he and Rita Hayworth might have crossed paths. Both Latin, and both dancers..... he'd be older, but still .... I think of the tango they might have done together.

I was thinking the same thing about him and Hayworth.

In 1946 he would have been 51 years old, so perhaps the tangoing might have been a bit more sedate. Then again, knowing it was Valentino (and he prided himself on keeping fit) I'm sure the director would have expanded his role so that Glenn Ford REALLY had cause to be jealous.

I was going to mention Joe!

Yeah, Gerald Mohr as Capt. Delgado, It's hilarious how Rita tells Glenn, "I love Latin men, they know how to dance". Oh if only they had cast Rudy! The dance floor would have CLEARED for him and Gilda. Ah, what might have been.

"I find Porter Hall strangely adorable. I feel we could have a Charles Coburn/Marilyn Monroe 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' type relationship. I'll be Marilyn, in case anyone is confused."

HA!!!! No doubt. You'd be a great Marilyn...I'm sure of it!

"I fear his socks would be wrinkled and falling down."

If a man can't keep his Argyles up...then I dunno! That doesn't bode well. Uhmmm...no pictures, please. (Whew!)

JackaaaAaaay, now THERE's a thought a Maven can work with (rather than Porter's wrinkled socks. Oh the imagery; la im-a-gerie)! Who the heck needs a maltese falcon when THIS is the stuff dreams are made of. Yeah, Rudy and Rita...doing a nice close...slooooow tango.

Wait a minute, that clip you chose...were you really just trying to sneak in a plug for your boy Joe? Why Marilyn... you sly fox!!!

Yeah that's quite a scene. I hope Rudy would be ready for a 1946 Rita Hayworth. Have you seen Rita in "GILDA"? It'd be fun to watch him use ev'ry bit of his charm and charisma to melt in his arms, someone who could have melted the sun.

I had this dream last night that...

Anybody fluent in Italian? I would love to know what the old woman is saying about Valentino. Thanks in advance!

One of my friends is Italian. I'll ask him to get on it. (The old gal probably thinks she slept with Rudy waay back when.

Io capisco un po l'italiano. What a fiesty Signora! I thought she was going to hit the man with the microphone. haha From the little that I understood, she mentioned that Rudy was best friends with her brother Pepino and he stayed over sometimes at their house. She conserved everything the way it was when he stayed there. She was never in love with him and didn't think he was extremely gorgeous as others thought. He was quite a bad boy from her account. lol

Barb, do you approve of Rudy bringing this baby camel to your villa? I'm afraid he can't part with it.

By the way, was his father a veterinarian?
