lzcutter
> I'm a big fan of mid-century modern. I love those Rat Pack era homes in California -- specifically Palm Springs and Santa Barbara. Barb, You would have loved Gary and Rocky Cooper's home in Holmby Hills. MrCutter and I attended a holiday party at the house back in the mid-2000s and the house has been lovingly restored:
Bronxgirl48
Check out Veranda -- that magazine is the tasteful, chic Southern antidote to Betty Lou Phillips and her ilk, lol. I used to be quite partial to clean, comfortable Scandinavian design -- it started when I first saw FANNY AND ALEXANDER. I just adored their home and the charming turn-of-the-century Swedish furniture, so elegant yet cozy. (I was always worried that all the Christmas candles would set everything ablaze, lol) Then I sort of turned away from this style as it seemed in my eyes to look a little, oh, I don't know, "fairy-tale-ish", if this makes sense. I've always been partial to mid-century modern, liking clean lines but not with a cold sleekness. I also went through my Shabby Chic phase, but it was a bit too "girly", or something. My dream home today would be Frank Lloyd Wright exterior, 1940's-50's-early 60's French Riviera/touch of Provence interiors. I like glass and wood combinations. Not a fan of ornate Victorian, although I occasionally fantasize about having a 19th-century "men's club" type library, you know, complete with roaring fireplace, leather sofa, gin and tonic served to me by Jeeves. Bronxgirl48
OMG Lynn, GORGEOUS GORGEOUS GORGEOUS!!!!! That's what I'm talking about - wowee!!!! You guys were so lucky to have been there. So many Hollywood celebrities had homes in Palm Springs, including I believe Old Blue Eyes.
Bronxgirl48
Lynn, I didn't know there were places like that in Holmby Hills! I know it's an exclusive area, but for some reason thought homes there were more traditional.
lzcutter
Barb, Most of the homes in Holmby Hills are more traditional but every once in a while an iconoclast changes it up. Here's Frank's place in Palm Springs:
lzcutter
Because when you live in the City of Brake Lights, it helps to have a stylish gas station nearby: The Union 76 station in Beverly Hills: Beverly[/i]hills+010.JPG] Day or Night:
Bronxgirl48
That gas station is a work of art, lol. Ah, Chez Sinatra! Lurv it! So cool...I understand orange was his favorite color, so he must have had a lot of it around.

Bronxgirl48
Oh I just LOVE Palm Springs! Yeah, Burt and Dinah... Wonder what Ski Nose's place looked like. Ever since watching ZORRO back in the day, lol, I also admire Spanish Colonial architecture. There's something very charmingly royal about it. Buona notte! SueSueApplegate
Oooooh. Lynn, these are lovely. O.K. Tell us about the house and the party, and don't forget about a play-by-play on the hor's d'oeuvre's tray. I choose Coop's place! Barb, which one do you choose? JackFavell
Definitely Coop's place. WOW! Check out Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh's home: http://celebritydigshq.blogspot.com/2009/08/celebrity-home-of-week-tony-curtis.html
SueSueApplegate
O.K., Barb. I am packing and ready to move! Houdini never had such a magical spell to cast. The spacious family room opening onto the patio with that vision of the pool does it for me. What a cozy "get away" from the Rat Pack even though Frank's place isn't that far away. I am detecing a faint odor of toasted Brie and freshed grilled tomato and basil crostinis right before I dive into the pool while wearing my Esther Williams vintage one-piece as I hear the tinkle of ice cubes as I rest my vodka collins on the coffee table... Bronxgirl48
Coop's place would make it to the top of my list. I'd love to see the inside of Frank's. Bet there were many swingin' moments in that "pad". JACKIE, I'm digging Tony and Janet's home! I'll let you know tomorrow if I can ever eat Brie again, sigh... Bronxgirl48
Did you and SueSue see the Sesto Calende, Lombardy, Italy episode on HHI? It was so obvious they were going to pick number three, as it was in town and where their little daughter's best friend lived. People always pick the new construction. Such a fake show, lol. I loved the way the couple decorated it, so modern Euro-Mediterranean chic. And they're close to Lake Como. I want to move there right now... Bronxgirl48
Thanks so much, Kyle! I love the faded colors. An obviously much more tradition home, and quite lovely. That would also be my idea of heaven. My idea of hell would be locked in a room listening to the voices of Home Shopping Network jewelry designers Joan Boyce and Heidi Daus. The ears cringe in horror. "HI,GIRLS!"

SueSueApplegate
Kyle, thank you so much for the lovely photo of Bob and Dolores Hope's cozy cottage. I think I could be quite snug in such a sweet abode. Coop's place is probably entirely too roomy and extravagant for me, prompting distant family members to engage in increasingly lengthy forays into my foyer.... Barb, I missed that episode. I will have to keep an eye out for it. Anything close to Lake Como and George Clooney's favorite home away from home is on my list. Sorry to hear about the Brie prohibition... lzcutter
> Oooooh. Lynn, these are lovely. O.K. Tell us about the house and the party The house was just incredible. The house was the site of a holiday party that the LA Conservancy's Modern Committee (the mid-century modern group that I'm a member of) held in 2006. The partners who lived there back in the mid-2000s took loving care of the house. One of them had put up the $$ to restore the Broadway dept store neon sign that overlooks Hollywood Blvd. Inside the house (the kitchen was to die for for cooks) was a wall devoted to classic stars with autographs. Also, they had some very early electronics (including a betamax machine, early Commodore computer, etc) on display (MrC was in heaven). But the house was the star. MrC has always liked mid-century modern design and has always been a big fan of the whole indoor/outdoor living style that is southern California but when he saw this house, he finally understood why I love mid-century modern architecture. Now, he is a big fan of that architecture as well.
Bronxgirl48
I got an encouraging report today, yay! My LDL went down 20 points. My doctor is happy! So he didn't prescribe statins, just told me to continue with the oatmeal, fruits and veggies, etc. Have to report back in three months, so, I'm avoiding my beloved Brie for awhile... I think Clooney sold his Lake Como home to Brad Pitt, which is much better as far as I'm concerned, lol.
