Wait a minute, let me think, yes, I'm wrong, he actually did, and it had a cleft in it. I seem to remember that when Edward Everett Horton grew old, his chin disappeared. I think that would have been a hoot! He needed to lighten up a little, that obsession he had with Lorraine was unhealthy. Not to mention the bullet he took for no real reason except that it saved Dana.
Bronxgirl48
On the other hand, actors with pronounced chins are also interesting. I was fascinated to see John Barrymore, Jr. in WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS. Not only a spit of the old man, but had his mannerisms, too!
JackFavell
Wait a minute! Who was JB Jr in that movie? I only saw the last half and never noticed him, though I don't really think I've ever seen him before. I probably thought he was just another guy doing a Barrymore impersonation! I only just realized that that huge hulking square Harry Kritzer was James Craig! Oh mother, he looked awful! I didn't recognize him.
Bronxgirl48
Poor Mel. Although the movie almost seems like a predecessor to THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, I don't think it's one of Tourneau's best.
Bronxgirl48
JB,Jr. plays Robert Manners, a very clever pharmacy delivery fellow, lol. I barely recognized Craig myself. He looked like Lon Chaney, Jr. Edited by: Bronxgirl48 on Jun 23, 2012 9:49 PM

All the same ideas and absolutely none of the style which is strange for Tourneur. Dana looked like he had had one too many by the time filming began, so maybe Tourneur just gave up. Now that I know who he was, I can see the Barrymore intensity in his performance.
Bronxgirl48
Yes, for a Tourneur film it was pretty flat, but maybe that was the effect he was going for? I don't know. There were a few eerie shots of dark, empty city streets that recalls THE LEOPARD MAN and THE SEVENTH VICTIM; unfortunately the only weird thing that shows up is Mel Torme. Bronxgirl48
My mistake -- Jacques didn't direct THE SEVENTH VICTIM, that was Mark Robson. I could have sworn it was Tourneau, but of course, my memory is gone with the wind. By the way, you remember me going on and on about the 1936 RAMONA, which I so wish TCM could run. Don Ameche and Loretta Young, as I've stated before, are just so natural in it, it's amazing. The music in the movie (not the song "Ramona", but this picturesque idyllic theme heard here) always make me bawl. I hope maybe you can see and hear how "modern" in his acting style Ameche is here, well, I think he is, but maybe others wouldn't. Unfortunately Loretta is not interacting with him in this clip, but just dancing. Edited by: Bronxgirl48 on Jun 23, 2012 9:51 PM

Stranger than a crabpuppy! I never realized it was Tourneur, so it didn't bother me much at the time I was watching it. But now it does! I think it must have been a flat effect that he was going for... he's too good not to attempt anything at all, he was too much of an artist. Strangely, Lang also does this in the latter part of his career, in the same time period, with While the City Sleeps and Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.... that's what leads me to think that it was a purposeful choice. These films always bother me because of their lack of discernible style, and yet it must have been a popular thing, that sort of grainy, dull-as-dishwater looking police procedural. Bronxgirl48
Put a long, dirty, scraggly beard on Junior and presto! It's papa in SVENGALI! Edited by: Bronxgirl48 on Jun 23, 2012 9:47 PM
JackFavell
WHOA! They do look alike! I don't know how I could have missed it. Those clips from RAMONA are tantalizing! It's a shame it hasn't played on TCM, it looks like it needs a huge restoration as well. I absolutely love Don Ameche, he fits so well into that southwestern setting, a little of his heritage slips out when he speaks to the little bambino. I see the movie also has a street urchin! Bronxgirl48
DNA is amazing, isn't it? I want to see more of young Barrymore now, if only to compare him to his dad. Don and Loretta are not convincing Native Americans, to say the least, lol, but that actually doesn't matter to me! I simply love their performances, and oh that ending! Kleenex alert! THE BLUE GARDENIA is another one of those Langs.

If I wanted reality, I'd watch Storage Wars. > THE BLUE GARDENIA is another one of those Langs. I agree, very lackluster to me, in comparison to the earlier Langs. Bronxgirl48
I was just looking at Junior's filmography. One of his films is THE NIGHT THEY KILLED RASPUTIN. (as a prince) He also played Stephen Ward. (talk about creepy parts) LOL re: reality. There's too much of it as far as I'm concerned; i.e. The Kardashians. Ugh. Doesn't Kent Taylor look like Snidley Whiplash next to sweet Don? I wonder if Ameche ever played an Italian. You're right -- another urchin! You're right -- another urchin! lol. I think Don looks better with a mustache, but he looks so sweetly innocent here in comparison with mustachio'd Kent that I can't resist him. Some guys just have the face for the mustache, and some don't. The 'stache makes Kent Taylor look slimy, sort of like a bulked up Zachary Scott. For me, the stache completes Don, it adds a certain je ne sais quoi to his character, makes him look either debonair, or slightly wicked, or even a little bored. Maybe more manly at times, or more elegant on occasion. I'm sorry, I'm off to bed, I've been under the weather this week, and am feeling tired. It was lovely chatting, it seems like so long since we talked.
Bronxgirl48
Buona sera! Va bene, Jackie? Yeah, I love Don Ameche with a 'stache. He, Gable, and William Powell can really carry them off. George Brent, too, although I think he looks best without one, in JEZEBEL. (great performance, too) "Last night I dreamt I went to Elephant Walk again". It was kind of cozy watching this after many, many years. EW played all the time back in the day. Was as sluggish as I remember it, even though I still want Liz's job at the quaint bookshop in Shillingworth-on-Thames. And young Peter Finch was a hunk. Missed EXPERIMENT PERILOUS, drat. Tourneur, too, blast it! Also forgot about UMBERTO D, but I think it's on YouTube. I will never drive in Italy. Look at this, lol, accompanied by a lovely instrumental version of the beautiful Neapolitan tune "O Paese D'O Sole" (I can't stop listening to it): Edited by: Bronxgirl48 on Jul 4, 2012 1:40 AM

Bronxgirl48
I just love how relaxed all the locals look as they go about their daily business, lol. Did anyone see THEY RODE WEST? Imitation Ford.
