He was! Yes, it's incredible who showed up there. And you could really get a glimpse of the human being behind the glitz and glamour. Many of them were nervous, had facial tics, etc. Just regular human beings. (for the most part)

I actually asked her one time and all she said was "Spats".

(oh, the Bennett/Raft movie I was trying to think of was THE HOUSE ACROSS THE BAY, which I stupidly missed, because I was glued to some QVC jewelry show)

I'm hopeless.

Rafty and Mike Mazurki making a few extra shekels...

GREAT JEHOSAPHAT!!! Here is a sample of what Carole must have referred to....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wg47cf11yc&feature=related

Dang!! That is the most erotic dance I have ever seen in a classic film of this period.

Carole's expressions don't look faked. I wonder if that's her in the long shots when

he's really tossing and twirling her around. I HAVE GOT TO SEE THIS FILM. Has

TCM ever aired it????

Years later, he's still got it:

I saw INCUBUS with William Shatner last night.

I thought I was being oh-so-clever with my original thoughts about it - "An Outer Limits episode directed by Ingmar Bergman", but apparently everyone on the imdb board felt the same way, ha!

I went to sleep right as it came on...I knew I'd be too timid to watch it. The name alone FREAKS me.

One of my least successful campaigns on my parents was the "Please buy me a pet ferret campaign." It ended quicker than you can say "John Edwards" but I still want one.

The one on the left looks like George Raft.

I've got to get my hands on George Raft...in BOLERO I mean.

That second movie clip was from another I haven't seen, LOAN SHARK and judging from its great condition, ought to be available somewhere.

I know just what you mean. That was one of the most enjoyable nights of TCM programming I've experienced in awhile. No real dud in the group, though I missed whatever was the first in the line-up at 8. And then to find myself suddenly Curdled by Rafters, wow! The irony is I used to tease one of my friends because George was his favorite actor.

I wish I could have caught that entire line-up. There's something very unpretentiously addicting about those Raft noirs.

I never thought much about George in any way until THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT.

Then I realized he was more than just some wooden gangster with the vasoline hair.

The House Across the Bay was my favorite. Joan Bennett, done up like Hedy Lamarr, was never lovelier. The tacked on ending was a bit of a let down but the scene right before it was great, they should have left it there. I felt SO sorry for George. He didn't deserve what he got.

Ha! I was just telling Molo that though I like him well enough in TDBN and MAN POWER, he didn't do much for me. He has always, until now, just been the guy that turned down roles Bogie made the most of. Most of my reading about him has been tangental, and none of it terribly enlightening. It gave me the impression he wasn't too bright. What I didn't know, beyond his underworld pals, was that he was what Robert Osbourne called a "colorful" personality. I never would have thunk.

But I never could get Carole's quip out of my head. It just didn't seem to match my image of him! 'Till now! :D

I just remembered Raft was in *Some Like it Hot*. :)

As for *They Drive By Night*, could one of the problems be, that in hindsight, you feel Bogie and Raft should have switched parts?

His IMDB bio says that he was a good dancer in his youth.

*He has always, until now, just been the guy that turned down roles Bogie made the most of. Most of my reading about him has been tangental, and none of it terribly enlightening. It gave me the impression he wasn't too bright.*

Yes that's exactly how I felt about him too. If you ever get a chance, check out *Night After Night*, more than just Mae West' s debut, and she is hilarious and actually somewhat of a different character than she would ever play again; it's a very enjoyable film and Raft and the rest of the cast are great to watch in this pre-code gem.

I like Chloe, too. I love METROPOLITAN! Developed a strange crush on Chris Eigeman. There's one thing that always freaks me out about this movie, though -- the actress who plays Tom's mother looks unnervingly like Piper Laurie in CARRIE.
