CineMaven
"Here are some of the less naughty pics I found of Mylene Demongeot. There was a another I wanted to post but I fear the men on the boards might have had heart failure..." "Tall T" here. HA!!! And no one to resuscitate our guys. You just saved some lives, Jack. I think today's Natalie Portman could have played Jean Seberg's role. I want to see "Moment to Moment" again. I remember loving Arthur Hill. (Love his voice). JackFavell
Wow! Talk about wavelength - I was _just_ looking at Jean and thinking about Natalie (it's probably the hair), and how she is one of the few of today's actresses who really looks like a star. She's pretty, but there is something arresting about her face, just as Seberg's face is interesting. Yes, it could be considered perfect, but there is something else there... So many new starlets have a bland "look" to me. I honestly cannot recognize them. I think beauty needs to have something odd about it in order for it to stand out from the crowd of "pretty". Maybe it's inside.
CineMaven
Wavelength...well, it's just that great minds think alike. There's an intensity about Natalie Portman. But here's someone you and folks should be on the look out for: Jennifer Lawrence who appeared in "Winter's Bone." She's a very fine young actress. In this cookie-cutter age of Hollywood, one has to have something unusual about them that stands out. I saw TCM's promo for Jean Harlow this month. As usual, TCM hit it out of the ballpark with that presentation. Their editing oft times drops my jaw. The cuts, the music make Harlow (to me) seem soooooo contemporary. Now I saw her in "Reckless." Sad to say Harlow cannot sing or dance. I chuckled when I saw those long shots of her and the cutaway shots to her feet hoofing (or whoever feet those were). Yikes! With that said, nobody, but nobody could touch her for delivering her lines. Especially what stands out for me with Harlow is her performances in "Libeled Lady" and in "Bombshell." She can't be touched. Great to be on your wavelength, Jack!
JackFavell
I love that promo, but I have to admit, the first time I HEARD it, I had to go to see what was on the screen, like someone changed the channel.... I guess that's what they want you to do! You are so right about their promos and intros, all have great editing and style. And Harlow? I missed Reckess, but Bombshell is great and I like her even better bad in Red Headed Woman. Perfect delivery, perfect figure, perfect timing. Bronxgirl48
Oooh, Jackie, it's brilliant you found a pix with the bleakly evocative shot of Cecile's face over her latest lover's shoulder. Says it all, doesn't it? I think I know which super hot photo of Mylene you're referring to, lol. This is the only one I could dig up of her in BT, tarnation: I do believe Mylene steals the movie. I'm also desperately on the hunt for THAT VILLA. WHERE IS IT????? CAN IT BE RENTED OUT OR BOUGHT??? Our great minds want to know.

MissGoddess
Lovely pictures of Mylene. She was a sweetheart. And I also like the white dress Cecile wears, the one that Ann designed for her. So sweet, crisp and spring-like. Gosh I think I've lost weight and then I see how tiny these actresses used to be. I just watched *Never Say Goodbye* and I'm so jealous at how beautiful Eleanor Parker was...and getting to be chased around by Errol Flynn. If you find the address of that villa it would be heavenly. Fortunately, they don't often tear things down to build new in France, so there is a good chance it still exists in some form.

MissGoddess
I need to say this somewhere where I won't get carted off to the funny farm (and I'll only post it once, don't worry) JOHN PAYNE IS GORGEOUS. Ah. I feel better now I got him...THAT...off my chest. Now back to tristing.
JackFavell
Seasons in the Sun is a perfect song! I never would have put those two together in my mind, but it works, probably because they are both french..... As for John Payne, he's totally growing on me lately. Bronxgirl48
I feel your Payne, Goddess. I'm glad you let it out here, ha! I like him in those noirs, and physically from the neck down. But his face reminds me of my schlubby Uncle Irving, rest his soul. I must be the only gal on these boards who doesn't get the warmies over John. However, I'm starting to go ga-ga over Lionel Barrymore (even disgused as a Lon Chaney, Sr.-type UNHOLY THREE old woman in THE DEVIL DOLL. I discovered two movies that I reacted to cozily as if I had seen them when a kidlet: DANCING CO-ED, with a charming, funny, sexy young teenage Lana, and my new heartthrob Lionel in THE VOICE OF BUGLE ANN, an evocative and touching story of an old man's love for his hunting dog. I was impressed (in a more adult way) with Godard's BAND OF OUTSIDERS. The suburbs of Paris never looked so beautifully melancholy, and Anna Karina is a wonderfully expressive actress. Bronxgirl48
I really love that Seasons in the Sun BT video. Except for one lovely large neo-Provencal villa that I posted in this thread some time back, haven't found anything on YouTube to replicate the charm of Raymond's Riviera hideaway. JackFavell
re: Seasons in the Sun vid - that bathroom in the villa? The one they walk through to get to sunburned Elsa? I want it! The tile...the tile! I spotted it in the movie this time and drooled...and it's in the video! *The Devil Doll* is a sorely under rated movie, and Lionel is truly wonderful in it...in fact, compared to Rafaela Otiano, he's positively restrained! I think this one might be my favorite of his roles in that time period. There are several of Lionel's nineteen thirties movies that I just love, because he hadn't yet become "LIONEL BARRYMORE". He's so relaxed and just sits back and gives these amazing performances. To me, it seems as if he responded to the pressure of the big movies by dressing up, whereas in his little movies, he does even more impressive work just by being quiet. My other favorite is *Looking Forward,* with an equally impressive performance by Lewis Stone. He is so great in *Looking Forward*, it gave me a renewed outlook on his other performances. I wonder if you've seen it? If you haven't you are in for a treat. The first of the *Dr. Kildare* movies is just great for this reason, I think we talked about *Ah, WIlderness* as well. Drake in *Test Pilot* is another of these small, really superb roles, as is Dan Pegotty in David Copperfield.

Now I know Jackaaaaaaaay didn't want to give the boys a heart attack with that picture of Mylene Demongeot...but women are made of stronger stock. We outlive men any way. So which one of you thinks she can post of a picture of John in the boxing ring. He's in his corner, in the chair, camera kind of looking up at him and...oh, I think you know the one I mean. Payne and pleasure. Hmmm...sometimes it's the same thing. I know, I know. Why oh why does she always go there?!! Is there a therapist in the house?? Bronxie, you'll never find that villa by getting the warm fuzzies with your traditionally untraditional choices. Uncle Irving, indeed! ;-)

I was thrilled to discover that video, because even though we just get maddeningly brief glimpses of the villa's interior, it's still better than nothing if one doesn't own a copy of the movie. I know, that tile!!! And I love how this bathroom is right off the terrace, so convenient...I also love the ceramic rose covered mirror where Cecile sticks her tongue out. As I've said many times before, the decor of these places on the French Riviera is the perfect blend of chic-ness and earthiness. > > *The Devil Doll* is a sorely under rated movie, and Lionel is truly wonderful in it...in fact, compared to Rafaela Otiano, he's positively restrained! I think this one might be my favorite of his roles in that time period. LOL I know what you mean about Ottiano. I love the name they give her, "Malita" -- Ha! Could it mean "little bad one"? Director Tod Browning borrows a page from his own THE UNHOLY THREE, then he steals from James Whale's BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (Pretorious's experiements) and Rafaela's hair streak. Malita's also a kind of "igor" figure -- instead of a hunched back, she's got some indeterminate crippled condition. Interesting how "in-bred, dumb peasant" Isabel Jewell, when she's shrunk, instantly becomes this lithe sexy woman who knows how to do an Apache dance, lol. > > There are several of Lionel's nineteen thirties movies that I just love, because he hadn't yet become "LIONEL BARRYMORE". What really impresses me about Lionel is the way he (as Paul Newman says, in his Liz Taylor tribute) knows how to "use his instrument". Lionel has played countless crotchety old men but each one of them is distinct, idiosyncratic. I love his creative discipline -- it allows Barrymore to etch unforgettable, unique characters devoid of easy, lazy stereotypes. I haven't seen LOOKING FORWARD. Give me that villa, but preferably with a ring on my finger (but I wouldn't mind spending some time with David Niven in Saint Tropez) Although Burgess Meredith must have had, um, something goin' on for Paulette Goddard to be interested in... Bronxgirl48
Any photos of Lana from DANCING CO-ED, in your Turner thread? She wears this perpetual sweet wee hair bow and is as cute as a June bug. Sultry at the same time. Lana and Richard Carlson make such an adorable couple!
