CineMaven
I was amazed at Esther Williams on "WHAT'S MY LINE." I found her to be incredible. She was witty and there was something about her that was...something. The panel was an erudite bunch. No Kardashians there! And John Daly was like a giggly Franklin Pangborn if Franklin liked girls. He was beside himself when she called for a conference. And sitting on Bennet Cerf's lap, was priceless. She revealed something to me on that show (her real life) that makes me want to watch her movies more. Thank you for sharing that. I would have never known. Bronxgirl48
Thanks, Maven. I read that Esther had a pretty traumatic childhood, and that swimming was her way out of a very bad situation. Who knew that PAGAN LOVE SONG would awaken me to her charisma? What I never understood about "What's My Line?" is the chalkboard. Couldn't they have made it larger? Every celeb had to crunch his and her last name in. If you really want to know what Mantan said to Cheetah, I'll PM you, lol. LOL Because I'm not sure about Jack LaRue's posterior. > It's kind of funny, though I am not averse to Valentino, he doesn't affect me as much as some of his replacements. I feel the same way, although if it were 1925 and Rudolph was up there on the screen, I might have lost my heart to him. I'm dying to know what his voice sounded like. Guess we'll never know. CineMaven
I always liked the blackboard part, b'cuz I wanted to see their real handwriting. Crazy huh. Watched an episode with Anita Ekberg as guest. She had on a gold lame dress. The crowd hooted and whistled like you wouldn't believe. And they guessed quickly. Check out Dorothy Kilgallen's look at the end. SansFin
Bronxgirl48 - I am sorry to say I have never seen Blithe Spirit. As Miss Marple she had been a champion in her youth in golf, shooting, horseback riding and fencing. It would not surprise me if she was also champion at bicycle riding. I have *The Ghost Goes West* recorded and I hope to watch it soon. I very much like Robert Donat. The thought of him being in a kilt will move the movie higher on my list. It's kind of creepy) How did we devolve from John Daly to Ryan Seacrest? It's so depressing. Those 'What's My Line?' vids are addictive; I did see the Ekberg one. Dorothy can't seem to take her eyes off Anita at the finale there.
Bronxgirl48
OH MY GOSH, MAVEN!! What a find, Rudy singing!!! Two songs!!! Wow! I love his voice, so deep and masculine, with a very, very heavy Italian accent. I don't understand a word he's saying in the first one, and he's off-key, but....WHO CARES??? Grazie for bringing this to us.
CineMaven
I had the best penmanship of all the girls in the third grade. My notebook was sent to the principal's office. Ryan Seacrest...the luckiest man on the face of the Earth. Yeah, Dorothy.

CineMaven
That'll do, Sans Fin. That'll do. Bronxie...I watched the Valentino vide; several times.. WoW!! What an opening. He's a magnet. He's swarmed by the people. I love when he runs his hands through his hair...and when he leans into the young lady. Look at the lady next to the girl whose sweetly and intently looking up and talking to Valentino. I do love when he leans towards the young girl. What a physique. I see his charms. I do see him as the prototype, and why LaRue, Raft & Cortez was made to look like him. Even John Boles in "Frankenstein" had that slicked back hair and dark soulfull eyes. I can see why the shock of Valentino's death affected so many. He "awakened" everyone.

JackFavell
If Boyer is there, I'M there. Another one with bedroom eyes. Let's round em all up in Walgreens, then bring em back to your place. I've heard Raft had more than just bedroom eyes... I was so mad, I didn't check the sched, and I didn't get *The Ghost Goes West* recorded, I had to leave before it was over! I mean I was kicking and screaming as the dragged me from the TV. The first half I LOVED. I am seriously thinking of buying it, if i can find a copy.... and that's really something for cheap little ol' me. Hey, Lookie what I found! I still want my own copy of course. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4ExC-mNbsc
JackFavell
I was wrong. Rudy is HOT. Talk about a nice.... um.... nether region..... I do remember seeing The Son of the Sheik when I was about 14 and swooning over him. Holy cow, what an embarrassment of riches in this thread today! Rudy, SEAN (looking like a million bucks, I might add), and Bobbie Donat! Hubba Hubba! Connery and Valentino are like a strike to the solar plexus - looking at them here, it quite takes your breath away. Robert Donat is the type you want to settle down with, in a nice castle or a forest glen. I'd want him to read to me by the fire and then...... CineMaven
...when you've sent Robert out into the dark dark forest to chop more wood for the fireplace, you open the back door to let in Jack LaRue. Donat has skinny arms so it will take him a long...long time to chop that wood. In the meantime, there's Jack...right there. And there's you...right there. And as Jack slowly walks towards you... JackFavell
ooooh. :x ....as he walks toward me, I try to scream but nothing comes out. Swiftly he's at my side, holding me tight, putting his hand over my mouth to keep me quiet. I can feel his heart beating next to mine as he looks deeply, searchingly into my eyes. He leans forward, slips his hand under the strap of my gown. Suddenly...... it's time to go make dinner.

Maven, I can't stay away from this video! And you couldn't have explained Valentino's appeal better. He just jumps out from the screen and is set apart from the other cardboardy 1920's characters by the sheer force of his natural charisma, a God-given magnetism. I can see the "regular" sweet young, modest Italian immigrant and the sensual, slightly intimidating, "exotic" "lady-killer" "foreigner". Watch the scene where Rudy first gets out of the car, fully dressed. His eyes slightly squint and glance furtively around, almost "gangster"-style, as if he's afraid to let anyone see his vulnerability in enjoying a relaxed, "exposed", day at the beach. (I also love the young woman in the striped bathing suit on the left, who jumps up and down when he joins the group.
Bronxgirl48
Oooh, Chris Lee as Rasputin, the Mad Monk! I have to watch this now! JACKIE, I'll be back afterward to discuss THE GHOST GOES WEST. Ticker-tape parade: car with empty seat and sign: Reserved For The Ghost Then, when he doesn't show up, a newspaper headline: SCOTCH GHOST HIGHHATS AMERICA! Rene Clair Meets Preston Sturges, lol See you later, lassie. Och, Robbie, Robbie...

He just jumps out from the screen and is set apart from the other cardboardy 1920's characters by the sheer force of his natural charisma, a God-given magnetism... Of course you can't. Valentino is positively electric in this video. I actually think it starts with the music. Music can make or break a video. Miss G. once posted a YouTube video about femme fatales that had Alice Cooper's music to it. I was completely blown away by the mesh of the music and the images. Same with this Rudy video you cited. I thought the song actually worked very well. (I've got to purchase it now). The intro to the song...is like a clarion call. And there he is. Valentino's physique is great! He's not overly muscular like a Schwarzenneger. It's just enough. Look at his deltoid muscles. Perfect. (I saw him in another video as "The Sheik." His arms were folded and it accentuates...defines his muscles). I see the shyness in Valentino...and the intensity. I wonder how his leading ladies withstood it. << Cut. CUT!!! >> You've renewed my interest in him. Perhaps TCM can have a film of his screened for their third film festival. Mmmmm...I'd love to be in a hushed darkened theatre, with a full orchestra, and Valentino on a big screen. "VALENTINO: THE FIRST SEX SYMBOL!!!" Sooooo, I'm wondering...what does Valentino have that John Lund or Larry King doesn't have?
JackFavell
There's only one word for what Rudy's got, but I can't print it here. According to Carole Lombard, George Raft had it too. If Larry ever had it it's shriveled away to nothing, but let's not think about that. I went back and watched the Rudy video again, and I think the best illustration is when he steps out of the car wearing shorts and adjusts himself. I especially like the scene where he is in the car changing clothes, wearing those sideburns... when he looks up at the camera, it's like the sun just broke out from behind the clouds. Magnetic is right!
