I finally go to see the x rated version of this infamous epic and all I can say is that less is more.   I'm not sure what Gore Vidal had in mind but I'm sure it was more than this sex and gore show.  Malcon McDowell gives it his all but he can't compete with all the sex and perversion which is not erotic just exhausting.  The sets and costumes are fabulous but Fellini did it first and better in "Satyricon" I do recommend getting the Imperial Edition which has a very amusing commentary by McDowell

Wasn't this underwritten (or produced or whatever) by Bob Guccione, the publisher of Penthouse? I'll bet there was a major photo spread of "The Girls of Caligula", like Playboy used to do with films which had a sex angle. (I think Hefner even did one for Funny Girl, of all things, because of all the showgirls.) Anyway, I can just see Gucccione hovering in the background: "More! More! More!" I haven't seen it and maybe won't, but thanks for the heads-up. Gore Vidal sure had his share of frustration with the movie industry, didn't he?

Of course there was a making off Caligula Penthouse edition!   Guccione sneaked into the spectacular sets (well he paid for them )and shot porn inserts.   Vidal should have tried to get Heffner to produce the film he had better taste.
