slaytonf
Caught it on George Segal day. Very Altman movie. Not his best, but I can watch it. Segal and Gould are a gas. Looks like they improvised a lot. Ann Prentiss and Gwen Welles are great, too, and would be better with more time. Well, that's all fine, and you could say a lot about what is ok about the movie and what isn't; but the real thing about the movie, the real thing is when Bill Denny goes into the massage parlor/nudie joint to gamble. He goes through a glass door and behind it is what looks like a bedroom with some kids on a bunk bed. And they're watching TV. And what's on the TV, what's on it is. . .Basketball Jones. Yeah.
sewhite2000
Basketball Jones is also heavily featured in Being There. I've yet to see the TCM hosts issue a warning that the following film contains a no-longer culturally relevant cartoon, but if and when they do, there will no doubt be seven thousand posters on these message boards expressing rage about it.
slaytonf
You. . . You mean Cheech and Chong are no longer relevant? No, no! Basketball Jones rules!
sewhite2000
Unsure if that's the term being used. Whatever they're saying when introducing films with racist characterizations or blackface portrayals. There are some highly disturbing racial images in Basketball Jones. slaytonf
And here I was all these years thinking it was satire. Shows you what I know.
