HollywoodGolightly
I don't think I have a favorite. They both could be quite compelling, as actresses, but also sometimes a little bit of each goes a loooong way. Very talented actresses, though, no question about that. visualfeast
It's difficult to compare these two...they're from two different universes...Bette from starchy New England, Joan from the streets, pretty much...and as a result, Bette was keen to become the character she was playing...glammy or dumpy...with or without makeup. Joan on the other hand, was always well put together, no matter what role she was playing. The shabbiest she ever got was in the early part of MILDRED PIERCE, and she was anything but a slob. I think between the two, Bette had more confidence, Joan needed the artifice.
laffite
>It's difficult to compare these two... Well, you sure did a good job, in one short and excellent paragraph. In a way, many actresses can be classified in the Joan Crawford mode. Bette was unusual if not unique among the bigger stars in her penchant for juicy roles and her blatant disregard how she might appear on screen. johnbabe
joan and bette cannot and should not be compared, and please do not compare Garbo to anyone else either
laffite
Well, no one would be silly enough to do that. Some people are, uh, well, incomparable.
