I just bought a Kindle Fire, and the first thing I did was buy and download all of Dirk Bogarde's books.  They are fantastic.  He wrote like no one else.  He talks about "Darling," Julie Christie, Charlotte Rampling, Capucine, Kay Kendall, and innumerable friends, as well as his home in Provence, his other residences, his childhood ... an absolutely amazing man.  He was far more than an actor.  I'm going to hate finishing these books.  He had a very clear view of his career, his good movies, his bad ones, the time with Rank, when he was under contract.  At the end of his manager's life he took care of him, right to the end, changing sheets, nursing him like a mother.  He died of a heart attack years afterward, after two strokes.  A wonderful person to the end.

I think my favorite bit was when he was in line at Harrod's and an impatient lady tried to push ahead of him, banging his cart with hers ... he, for once, stood his ground and said he would move when he'd been served.  At this point the manager came over and said, "There you are, M'lord!  What can I do for you today, M'lord?"  By that time he had been knighted and was Sir Dirk Bogarde.  The woman was pretty disgruntled and shoved off grumbling.  Get his books.  Highly entertaining; such fun.  Not always happy, but really wonderful to read.

Billy Gilbert and his wife, Ella, affectionately nicknamed "Lolly" and formerly known as Ella MacKenzie, a movie star ingénue who appeared in many movie shorts.

I wonder if when Billy Gilbert gave his wedding vows he said, "I duh . . duh. . . duh. . . ACHOOOOO!!!. . . do."

I wonder if Billy was referring to his wife in one of the best scenes in His Girl Friday where he exposes the mayor for bribing him to conceal the death sentence reprieve.          While he is only in the film for a few minutes he adds to the farce in a big way.
