That's quite the coincidence that two of Fox's biggest stars (and co-stars who were friends) would share the same birth date. I bet there were some big joint celebrations taking place on the Fox lot on this day back in the late '30s and early '40s.

Reading about Hurrell, I learned that when he had his subjects coming in for a sitting, he would ask them not to put on any makeup, and would retouch the pictures himself afterward to get that Hollywood perfect-skin glow.  Joan Crawford had a million freckles, and not one ever showed after Hurrell got through with her proofs.  Tyrone Power had a very heavy beard, so much so that he had to shave twice a day during filming, but he's as smooth as a baby in this picture.

When Alice married Phil Harris, I remember the joke went around that he had bought a railroad, called the "Atcheson, Topeka and the Alice Faye."  She was a real man magnet.  Tony Martin was after her hot and heavy (he says in his joint autobiography with Cyd Charisse), and so was George Brent, at the same time.  Tony says he was in a men's shop one day when a clerk asked him if he would try on a coat for a customer who said he was about the build of the man she was buying the coat for.  Turned out it was Garbo buying the coat for George Brent, and even though Tony didn't like the idea of doing George any favors, because of their mutual admiration for Alice, he said he couldn't pass up the chance to meet Garbo, so he did it.  Later, of course, he married Alice.  It didn't last very long.

Wow! Well then Alice must have had one hell of a personality, 'cause frankly, I always thought looks-wise, eeeh, so-so.

(...and nothin' to write home about)

Thanks for the Ricky Nelson photos and remembering Ricky's Birthday, Joe. Loved Ricky and his music. Of all the many versions of the great song Fools Rush In, his is my favorite. He would have been 75 years old today. We'll always remember him as the adorable kid, gorgeous young man and handsome adult.
