laffite
Laffite, it might be a snood? I checked images on yahoo and did not see anything really resembling it. Many snoods look like scarfs (scarves?). I would guess it would be a hat, but I am certainly no expert. How could I be when until now I had never heard of a snood. So much for expertise. A snood resembles more of a small bag that the hair goes inside and then the snood is pinned into the hair. A lot of times the snood fabric resembles macrame or some type of netting.
Dothery
A note on snoods: They're very old. They were in fashion during the Civil War, and probably a lot earlier. Many portraits exist of young women wearing them in that time. They came back into fashion during World War II. Hats sometimes had snoods attached to them. Performers in the USO units wore them a lot, since they couldn't shampoo often but had to look neat going from place to place to do shows on short notice. I remember a picture of Mayo Methot wearing one on a trip with Bogart.

sapphiere
Barbara Stanwyck wearing a snood - I would wear a snood over a hat with a veil. Bridal veils and black veils for mourning are fine. Ladies hats are lovely, and I wore a hat to church for many years. But a hat with a net connected obscuring a woman`s vision bugs me. What an inconvenience for a kissing scene too! rohanaka
Sorry to interrupt, Mr. Mongo sir. But if I may.. re: the whole 'is it a hat? is it a snood?" question... I am no kinda "hat/scarf/headwear" expert.. but it looks more like a turban to me (also sometimes referred to as a turban hat.. so yeah.. possibly could call it a hat) Here is a link I found.. the one on the top right looks very similar. http://moviestarmakeover.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/border-turbans-with-SA-style-in-copy.jpg Thanks for letting me chime in.. now back to those great pics!
Dothery
About turbans ... we all thought if we wore them we'd look like Marlene Dietrich. We didn't. We looked like girls who didn't have time to do their hair. The only movie star I ever saw looking good in a turban (besides Marlene) was Lana Turner in "The Postman Always Rings Twice," but Lana looked good in anything.

Wonderful! ...as usual, Ro. It seems to be a turban. And to Dothery, I agree, I don't think they look good (excepting certain Marlenes and Lanas of course).
