My favorite movie of 1956 is Giant.

My favorite flick of the year is THE SEARCHERS.

Best Actor: John Wayne THE SEARCHERS

Best Actress:  Ingrid Bergman in ANASTASIA

Best Supporting Actor: I really hate to go against Anthony Quinn, but I have to concur the supporting award should have gone to Anthony Perkins in FRIENDLY PERSUASION, one of his best pre-PSYCHO/Norman Bates parts.

Best Supporting Actress: Patty McCormack in THE BAD SEED (what an evil little brat she was).

  Probably my Favorite feature from that year would be Run For the Sun.

  With That Said though; the Searchers and Friendly Persuasion are so Close at the Sun's Heels that it might be best to declare a three way tie.

I have not seen The Rainmaker.  I will have to remember to catch it the next time it's on TCM. 

Among American films I would include Invitation to the Dance, The Wrong Man and The Killing.

THE RAINMAKER is well worth watching.

And I also enjoy INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, THE KILLING and THE WRONG MAN.

From a tech point of view.  A 5 megabyte hard disk drive in 1956.  For perspective, nowadays that might hold one pop song and a still image at 1920/1080 resolution on YT.  Or not...  Especially not if it is good music. You might be especially lucky if this even holds Cardi B's butt for 3-5 minutes. 😁

Back in 1956 this was something to behold.  Just Imagine. (1930s....don't even get me started)

Also movie buffs, don't forget about Forbidden Planet (1956).  My favorite #1 of all time. Walter Pidgeon, Leslie Nielson, et al.  Now you know me...best movie ever.     It is not so much about acting, as it is about story telling.  Leslie Nielson's last words which he horribly bungled for no apparent reason: "After all, we are not G-d."  Amen.

You have a great list.  Here are my favorites in order of most favorite.

1.  Giant

2.  The Searchers

3.  The Red Balloon (French film without words)  Has a theme of innocence and imagination.  I find it very unique.

4.  The Killing - directed by Stanley Kubrick with Sterling Hayden.  I love this film noir about a planned "job" at a racetrack.

5.  Carousel - wonderful songs by Oscar and Hammerstein.

Seems more of a short to me.  But I brought it up before as one of the films a local TV station would show annually for several years each Thanksgiving  after the J.L. Hudson(Detroit) parade.

1956?    Well.... that was the year I entered Kindergarten.    I wasn't impressed.        Movie wise....

Forbidden Planet would have to be my #1 for 1956 and I'm even going to go so far as to say the best science fiction film on the 1950s.  It's a film I can watch over and over again, and it still holds up well against more modern fare
