How much do Televangelists Make?

You mean, they have THAT much left over AFTER using tons of it to help the needy?  And do lots of other GOD'S WORK?

I'd bet there is quite a large overlap in the Venn diagram between televangelist supporters/donors and Trump supporters.

No need for cynicism about the good work done by televangelists, is there? No one would ever accuse them of pocketing money for themselves, would they? Until, that is, they got caught . . .

Yeah,  that's a great photo. Bakker being led down the steps of the courthouse during his trial, after they found him under a desk, blubbering. "Why are you doing this to me?" he was saying when that pic was snapped. You already knew the answer to that, Jim. You're a charlatan who fleeces desperate old people. Prison is too good for the likes of you.

Kenneth Copeland? Man, that guy is flat-out nuts

Jim Baker went on record stating what he and his wife did was a mistake.  His wife Tammy  blamed OTHERS  for their (PTL) demise and couldn't wait to drop Jim like a sack of potatoes.

I accepted Jim's apology (to his followers and Jessica Hahn) and karma caught up wife owl eyes Tammy.

Still remember the docudrama on Lifetime about PTL in 1990 - came on the same Sunday night I rebuilt my steps.

Jim took FULL responsibility and blamed no one else. (for those with selective memory)

What's sad is their followers got caught up in the whole "prosperity gospel" mantra they were preaching back in the 80s.  If you send us money, God will reward you!  The people living next door to me growing up were members of the same church as the Bakkers, and watched PTL constantly.   They got wrapped up in their economic philosophy, sent them money (which they could not afford to do) and sent their kids to an expensive Christian college.  In order to keep up the pretense while deep in debt, the mother of the family started embezzling funds from a local charity.   She was their bookkeeper, so she had access to all incoming and outgoing funds.  She did this for several years before getting caught.  She was given probation and ordered to pay back the funds (just under $100K) with interest, in installments.   They finally paid it off after about 25 years.  Their two older children never knew about this (still don't) as they were away at college when it fell apart.

As I understand it, Bakker no longer espouses the prosperity gospel, but preachers like Joel Osteen and others certainly do.   One of them, Paula White, a Trump "spiritual adviser" (!) and advocate of Christian Trumpism (a textbook oxymoron if ever there was one), gave the invocation at his inauguration.

During the 1980's I only heard of PTL but never watched it only learned about it's workings during the scandal and fallout.

Those who preach "prosperity gospel" tends to forget the passage in Matthew 16:9.

Anything here on Earth can not be taken with you and will eventually all become ash.  MAN will NEVER build utopia (religious or political) here upon the Earth, it's a fools folly.

My mom had a friend who watched PTL but for herself, detested it.  She only watch Charles Stanley and Billy Graham Sr.

Interesting fellow, Billy Graham. Years ago, I was listening to one of his broadcasts and I was very surprised to hear him speak on conjugal intimacy. He made the point that it's not a sin to enjoy it, and, in fact, he and his wife enjoyed it.

Of course, it was said so much more eloquently. He didn't get up there and say "Last night, me and my old lady wuz knockin' boots!!"

Ugh!  My mom was HUGE into all those "preachers".  She didn't start off that way.  She wasn't really religious until my younger sister was diagnosed with severe autism.  Suddenly, all these "Christians" were coming out of the woodwork and telling her that if she gives money to the church and to televangelists, that God would heal my sister.  She GLOMPED onto that.  Church just about every day, (leaving me to baby-sit my sister).  Severe beatings if I sinned, (meaning if I got caught watching a tv channel that wasn't PBS or TBN).  We were always poor growing up because she was just so guilt-tripped into giving to the church and televangelists.  A few times, my Dad went too far with his beatings, so my Mom would gather me up and take me out for ice cream.  Then she would call a prayer line from TBN and cry over the phone about what happened.  Yep.  You tell a so called "Christian" that your husband beat your child black and blue and their only response is to pray.

The weird thing was, growing up, I knew what they were doing was wrong.  When I was going to church and listening to the fire and brimstone sermons, it was like a voice inside my head was screaming "This is wrong!"  I don't trust churches, or for that matter many Christians, though I do still consider myself one.  I feel like such a weirdo.

Televangelism has nothing to do with actual Christianity.

Too add, many "Christian" churches don't follow Christ teachings, some goes as far to blend in the Old with the New Testament if nothing is found in the latter suit their beliefs.  The World Wide Church of God (Armstrongism) is an example.

We are under grace NOT Law.

Y'all are quick to blame the televangelists, but overlook the REAL one to blame.  GOD!  I mean, imagine.....

That God would go so far as to  "call home" ORAL ROBERTS (sounds like a gay porn actor's name, eh?  ;) ) if he didn't raise $8 million by March, '87!   If you or I threatened someone like that we'd be arrested for extortion.   But then....

It all depends on whether or not you're fool enough to believe any of that.

Yeah,  that's so far back in the list of outrageous behaviors by these charlatans, I had forgotten all about it. God finally did call him home, but many millions of dollars later, in 2009

Kenneth Copeland makes Oral Roberts look like a sane man. This guy has lost any marbles he may have had.

And then, there's this deeply shameful display.

It's hard to imagine how much it hurts believing Christians, the shenanigans of the more spectacular charlatans out there who claim the name.  It's so painful, every time another one turns up, or blows up, before our eyes.  Yet I know how flawed I am, and mankind is.  These guys are, and they fall, doing terrible harm.

Speaking just for myself, it doesn't shake my faith even one little bit.

And since some of you like to quote scripture......

Matthew 7:15
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

1 John 4:1
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Matthew 24:24
For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

2 Peter 2:1
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

And in March 2020 he was on the air with his new Tammy look alike wife selling silver as a preventative for Covid. It's one thing to give people false hope, it's another thing to sell it to them. He's still a grifter though he does seem to have dementia at this point.
