Thanks, Aritosthenes, for seconding "Anchors Aweigh" -- though not to slight any of the other terrific films and shows he contributed to.  I wonder sometimes what Gene Kelly and Rags Ragland were thinking when they had to play off this incredibly talented youngster!  Boy, does that kid really hold his own in those scenes!

My favorite "Quantum Leap" moment was from the Season 2 episode "Honeymoon Express," in which Rear Admiral Al Calavicci  (Stockwell) appeared before a Senate committee whose chairman intended to pull the plug on the time-travel project.

As the chairman prepared to announce the committee's decision, he magically was replaced by a female chairman who said the $2.4 billion funding for Project Quantum Leap had been approved for another year. As it happened, the woman had been involved with Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) during one of his leaps to the past. Thanks to him, she was able to pass a bar exam, which set the stage for her political career.

Such sad news. Jakeem, I appreciate your in-depth post about his acting career! Besides Song of the Thin Man, I actually have not seen too many of his film appearances. I mostly know him from his TV shows. Quantum Leap is one of my favorites and he was always so good in that.

You're so right about "Stars in My Crown",  LORNAHANSONFORBES--   a film unusual for Hollywood and heartfelt.  Plus having the benefit of both Joel McCrea and Dean Stockwell.

YES THANK YOU! And sorry for misspelling JOEL'S name, I NEVER, EVER GET IT RIGHT.

Aww he's such a favorite of mine.  I watched "Married to the Mob" over and over, mainly for his hilarious Tony the Tiger.  His parody of every mob boss in every movie was  perfectly on point.  It didn't hurt that  he was always so very good looking, at every age.

The Player (1992) a memorable small role [for DEAN STOCKWELL] as a Hollywood wannabe who pitches an idea to hot shot movie producer Tim Robbins

MIGHT I ADD: a completely hare-brained, idiotic, nonsensical. NTH-Rate HACK idea for a movie and STOCKWELL in his role works so hard at selling it, I'm not the least bit surprised that HOLLYWOOD ending up making the movie for real years later (as THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE)

DEAN STOCKWELL gives, in retrospect,  one of the most pivotal, important performances of the film.

As a channel on my service(Comet)  shows reruns of QUANTUM LEAP weekdays(Mo.-Thurs.) I've been seeing a lot of Dean these days.  This is sad news.  But he's sure had a full life and career, wouldn't you say?   And we were all the richer for it.

Rest In Peace Dean.  You've well deserve it.

Fine actor and as pointed out had a solid career in so many different phases over decades.     E.g. He was in the 50s T.V. westerns as a young man - one was Wagon Train where he played the younger brother of Shelley Winters.          Just one example of the over 100 roles for him.

Russ Tamblyn had this  to say:
Dean. My oldest friend. A godfather-figure to my daughter, Amber. Brilliant artist. Loving dad. We met on the set of The Boy With Green Hair, stayed close til his last breath. Rest easy now, brother. Give Dennis a hug from me when you see him on the other side.

(I assume Dennis is  Dennis Hopper).

I remember him on films and on TV.  Hope TCM uses a range of his movies (e.g., Gentleman's Agreement and Married to the Mob).  Has Scott Bakula said anything about losing his Quantum Leap co-star?

Cattle Drive (1951)  was my favorite child-Stockwell  pic. A quasi Captains Courageous set in the West with the great Joel McCrea.

Extremely versatile performer. Who  did NOT appreciate him?

May God grant him peace and shine perpetual light upon him

One of the last links to old Hollywood, sad to hear. Although when asked about Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra in Anchors Aweigh, he said that he did not see movies at the time, and did not know who they were when he met them. They were just a couple guys he was working with.

My favorites;

Gentlemen's Agreement (1947)

The Boy With Green Hair (1948)

Compulsion (1959)

Sons And Lovers (1960)

Long Days Journey Into Night (1962)

Blue Velvet (1986)

Some not mentioned-

The Dunwich Horror (1970) which gave him a chance to be villiainous

The Player (1992) a memorable small role as a Hollywood wannabe who pitches an idea to hot shot movie producer Tim Robbins

One of my all-time favorite actors, this one is a heart breaker for me.  I believe I've seen just about all of his movies.  Your top six films, along with Anchor's Aweigh, are my top favorites.  Tonight I'll be watching my DVD of Sons & Lovers.  Rest in Peace, Rest in Paradise, Dean Stockwell.

One of my favorite child actors who grew to be a great adult actor. For some reason, I find myself thinking about Margaret O’Brien his costar in The Secret Garden. I think she remained friends with him throughout the years.

ETA: there’s a really good interview with him from the 1990’s on TCM’s YouTube page.

it's been quite a few years now, but a while back, MICHAEL McKEAN and ANNETTE O'TOOLE hosted a month of movies on TCM and they were THE BEST GUEST HOSTS EVER.

They showed LONG DAYS JOURNEY INTO NIGHT (1962) and I actually made it all the way through the GD thing (it's 3 hours and kinda torturous, y'know: O'NEILL), in part because of their encouraging remarks at the start, but in part because it's a well-filmed play and DAMN THE ACTING IS FIRST RATE across the board- HEPBURN and SIR RALPH RICHARDSON and JASON ROBARDS and especially STOCKWELL, who does so much to make SUCH CHALLENGING MATERIAL interesting to a film audience (and succeeds)

(gosh he reminds me of a boy who broke my heart once in this picture)

in a year less AMAZING than 1962, STOCKWELL could (and should) have gotten an Oscar nomination.
