I thought it compared favorably with the original, which I had just seen a couple of weeks prior on TCM. I will say that I thought the first half dragged a bit. Seems like they could've quickened the pace to me.

There’s a lot of potentially iffy movies out there that were turned into something great just by a good score and good editing. (I mean JAWS comes to mind right off) So adapted scoring is on the show, but not original score??? That makes no sense. Is there an adapted category anymore?? For a little while they split the score award up between best comedy/musical score and dramatic score, but I think they went back to just having one category for best score. There is no current category for "adapted score or anything similar. They haven't done that since the early 1980s. 1983 was the last year with such a category. Current rules for eligible scores is that 60% of the music must be original, and 80% if it's a sequel or part of a franchise.
King Rat
Editing, musical score, hair and makeup, and production design are all categories that work well for TV. Show a montage from each editing nom, play snippets from the musical scores, show clips of the hair and makeup, and clips of the production design. It may be heresy, but I would not miss the documentary (especially since the popular documentaries are frequently not nominated by the other jealous documentarians), short subject, and animation categories. And, like everyone else, I would not miss the desperately unfunny jokes. 1

Who decides this? How could anyone come up with a judgement like that? 60%?

But if people aren't interested enough in the films, they don't care about production numbers and lame salutes/montages. Also agree. I'd be fine with them dropping docus and short subjects if they want to cut stuff. I'd also be ok with doing a best song medley rather than 5 numbers. Most song nominations are duds anyway........I think they may have done this one year or dropped it entirely.

For the most part it is a lovely film, reminiscent of Amarcord and Radio Days. Just a collection of vignettes rather than a cohesive plot, but well done. As for Judi Dench, hers is not a particularly flashy role , so you don't have to worry about her being in every scene.

CinemaInternational
Since some of the minor categories this year are getting cut, I thought maybe we could have a compare and contrast here to see which ones should win, just based on photos and looks. First up, Costume Design, or as I call it personally: The Edith. 5 photos from each contending film. Cruella: Cyrano: Dune: Nightmare Alley: West Side Story: 1
