They're in a whole different category from teddy bears. For one thing, they're not trying to be cute. My main objection to teddies is, there's this expectation of cuteness that I find really annoying. Now I know clowns are supposed to be scary. But I am don't really find them to be so. Come to think of it, since there are so many horror movies featuring clowns, why not make a horror movie featuring teddy bears ? Now that would be disturbing ! ( and yes, while we're on the subject, I'm aware there's a whole plethora of films about horrifying scary dolls....)
JamesJazGuitar
Looks like clowns and teddy bears have also hijacked the Noir Alley schedule for the next two weeks.😀 The next showing is on New Years Day with Repeat Performance (1947) with Joan Leslie, Louis Hayward, Tom Conway and often featured noir actor Richard Basehart. I find this to be the best post-Warner-Bros Joan Leslie film. The setting features New Years Day so this is a good fit for starting the new year.

Just a little. You know we always get back on track. And yes, I'm looking forward to seeing Repeat Performance. Eddie's airing it on Noir Alley is itself a repeat performance ( was it last New Year's Eve or the one before he showed it?) but that's ok, I 'd like to see it again . Thompson
Got it. I know a gal who hates clowns, can’t stand clowns, but I figured it’s because she’s afraid of them.

There's probably a classic noir that features a clown, although off-hand I can't think of one.

Those comments that he made about the actress's attractiveness were made to me and a friend in his office at TV Ontario. Deanna Durbin is a very sensual actress. I've seen Lady on a Train a few times, and she really shines. That nightclub scene when she seduces David Bruce's character right in front of his fiancé is quite bold and unexpected.
cinemaspeak59
I just saw Cruel Gun Story. It’s a fairly typical yakuza picture: double-crosses, lots of violence, a high body count, and the overarching fatalism. Joe Shishido is a charismatic actor, and in all of the films I’ve seen him in, he makes us join his side; we want him to win. The black & white photography in Cruel Gun Story is very alluring.

Lady on a Train must have also been a test to see how audiences would react to supporting player David Brice elevated to the role of light leading man. I guess the reaction was not positive enough because he would soon be relegated back into supporting roles again.

Now, Dan Duryea and Deanna getting together would have been something

TomJH
Okay, so I'll continue the Christmas tradition that somebody, somewhere, always asks at this time of year: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? Yes, with two noir protagonists in the mother (throw into a noir situation) and the criminal (Mason, who lives and tries to survive in that world).
