Maybe this should go in the "Lookalikes" thread, and maybe it might be because I still might have had Nightmare Alley on my mind from last week, but the actress who played Crawford's loyal girlfriend in this movie, German-born Betty Buehler, looked to me like she could've been Coleen Gray's older sister...

Anyone else seein' that here?

(...and yep, I liked this film quite a lot too, and for the very reasons many of you have said here)

Yes, there is a resemblance. Good one, Dargs.

Over Exposed will not be that in Canada on TCM. We get The Maltese Falcon in its place.

Thank goodness, I was afraid I might be corrupted by too much Cleo Moore.

Aargh, I hate that ! I just go berserk whenever we Canadians don't get to see a film aired on TCM that Americans get to watch. Especially if it's a rare or little-known film, one I've never seen, such as Over-Exposed. Oh, it makes me maaad. ( what movie /tv show is that from, I know it's from something. Probably something that I'm not allowed to see in Canada.)

You seem to be much more philosophical and resigned about the situation than I am, Tom. What bothers me the most is, I have a feeling that these "rights" issues will never be resolved, that it's a bottomless rabbit-hole, a Gordian knot of greed and red tape, that will never be unravelled.

...of course, given all the things in the world there are right now to worry about, I suppose "not available for viewing in Canada" would rate right near the bottom of the list ( a very long list, it is, too.) Perspective.

Yea, I feel your pain when TCM doesn't show a film in Canada that they are showing here in the USA, but from a self-centered USA POV, that fact might be in line with my speculation that TCM set up some limited lease of select Columbia films and this lease doesn't allow for some of these films to be shown in Canada.

The Mob was also a Columbia release from around the same time period and that one was shown in Canada. Hopefully Over-Exposed is the only Columbia noir\crime film TCM can't show in your country.

Ever have to use this line yourself, James? ;)

Well a few times some of my friends and I did get into this; You see when I got into jazz I gave away all of my rock albums. ALL OF THEM.

So when some of my friends would come over and ask for me to play something that they liked (which was rock), I would tell them I don't have any. They would claim BS.

I would say; well there is my stack of records, look for yourself. They really felt I had lost it, and in a way they were right: I wanted to learn jazz guitar and was told by jazz musicians that I needed to really focus just on jazz.

It was about 20 years later before I lighten up!

Right now I'm a little more concerned over my area (Toronto GTA) just getting hit with the biggest snow storm in over 40 years. I've shovelled the driveway four times today and all I can say is 'Oh, my aching back!'

One more reason why I might be a little less concerned than you, MissW, is that I have discovered it is often possible to find copies of the films that don't make it into Canada on the internet. There's an okay, if somewhat soft, copy of Over-Exposed on You Tube, for instance. I realize you may much prefer to watch a film on television, but it's better than nothing.

Besides, it's The Maltese Falcon getting a repeat in Canada, misswonderly. You can't be objecting to that entirely.

Eighty years since John Huston's The Maltese Falcon - World Socialist Web Site

"You complaining that TCM's showing our film, Wonderly?"

"No, Sam, it's not me. It's another Miss Wonderly."

"Another Miss Wonderly. Don't hand me that. That's an even bigger lie than the one you gave me about some fat man and a black bird!"

And MissW, you might also remember Kiley as the teacher who the delinquent students rough up and break his record collection in the film Blackboard Jungle...

Richard Kiley is even better known as a Broadway leading man, star of Kismet and Man of La Mancha. To some, his voice will be familiar from cast albums. He introduced "Stranger in Paradise" and "The Impossible Dream."

I feel your pain here, Tom.

You see, usually each January or February, we in Sedona will get a storm through here that'll drop 2 to 6 inches and sometimes every five years or so even as much as 7-10 inches of the white stuff within a 24 hour period and that'll have me breaking out the snow shovel. However and as of yet THIS winter, nary a flake of the stuff has fallen. Nope, just a little rain so far this year.

(...and so, can you just imagine how much I'm filled with the emotion of dreaded anticipation by what's almost sure to come in the next month or so???) ;)

I had no idea that Arizona got snow. We had a record breaker today, the largest January snow fall since 1978.

I have to tell you when this kind of heavy snowfall happens (and this snow isn't going anywhere for some time) I feel badly for the wild animals in our area. Just yesterday morning, less than 24 hours before we got whacked, I was watching an eastern cottontail eating some grass on my front lawn and wondering how he and his cousins were going to survive. I suspect the answer is that a lot of them don't. Nature can be beautiful but also, at times, so damn cruel.

Oh yeah. Up here in the northern high country of Arizona and in towns such a Flagstaff, Prescott and Sedona, we get snow, alright. Particularly so up in Flagstaff which sits at 7,000 ft in elevation. And in fact, NW and just out of Flagstaff there's a mountain chain called the San Franciso Peaks and in which on the highest of them named Humphrey's Peak with an elevation of 12,633 ft (3851m) there's a ski resort named Snow Bowl that's doing pretty good business right now and after a winter storm dropped 3 feet of the white stuff a few weeks ago.

Here's what Sedona (at 4,500 ft) often looks like for a few days after a winter storm blows through...

Ah...Flagstaff...home of the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks who play football and basketball in a domed stadium (Walk-Up Sky Dome). I liked Sedona when I went through there about 15 years ago on the way to the Grand Canyon...nice town. Flagstaff was OK, but the day I was there it was sunny and about 65 with gale-force winds! Well, the winds weren't that fierce, but they were constant at about 25-30 MPH, according to the radio.

Here in south central Illinois. we got our first measurable snowfall of the season Saturday morning (a whopping 2 inches). We got a dusting Sunday night, so I had to get out there this morning to sweep off the sidewalks and driveway. Most people around me don't like winter weather. I told a friend I liked snow and wish I had more of it to shovel (4-6 inches is fine by me). They told me I'd be risking a heart attack by shoveling snow. I replied, "Been there, done that!", since I'm coming up on the 4-year anniversary of my heart attack.

As for "The Mob", I liked it. I had never seen it before either, and I caught those palm tree shots in what was supposed to pass for New York. That didn't mess up the story though, as far as I was concerned. Broderick Crawford was a big deal on the big and small screens back in the 40's and 50's, but I'd never heard of the guy until he hosted Saturday Night Live in March, 1977!

I finally saw The Lineup, which was shown on Noir Alley a few months go. Can anyone tell the reason for the film's title? Yes, I know, there was a police lineup at one point in the film but so what? It's not as if that scene is even an important one in the film.

As for the film itself, after a pretty conventional police procedural first half, it picked up in interest for me. Both Eli Wallach and Robert Keith were effective in their roles, and Don Siegel's car chase at the end is an exciting one. A pretty good film overall. Still, that title . . . what gives?

Sorry I'm only bringing this up two months or whatever it was after everyone else discussed it.

In regards to SNOW: Yesterday, we got snow in middle GA for the first time in about 8 or 9 years. Been a while!

It didn't pile up on the ground; I reckon the ground wasn't cold enough for it to 'stick', but it was nice to see snow 'live' in the Greater Meansville area. 🥶🌬️❄️

I've been dealing with COVID for a week so I was not able to go outside for very long and enjoy the snow and chilly wind . . . but it was fun to look out my front door and watch some snow come down.

ALSO: I like that picture of Sedona blanketed with snowfall.

→ I recall a snowy noir with Aldo Ray. Saw it on TCM a while back. I remember part of the movie took place in the snow. Think it was a 1957 color movie with a couple of obnoxious hoodlums -- maybe Brian Keith and a co-hort whom kept annoying Keith. I remember the co-hort guy going (to Keith near the end) "You don't like me, do you?"

Yep, good suspenseful film noir alright, Mr. G. Its title is Nightfall (1956).

However, it's in B&W, not color.

Really enjoyed The Mob! Great dialog and plenty of twists and turns. I should have guessed the surprise reveal, though. And the first film in a good while on Alley I hadn't seen! :D

Just like midwesty here Hibi, I also remember watching the SNL episode hosted by Broderick Crawford back in '77. And yes, I also remember thinking at the time that he was an unlikely host for the show.

And so in this regard, I've found what might somewhat help explain this. It's an excerpt from some website blog titled, "Live from New York, really? The least likely SNL hosts":

Broderick Crawford

Broderick Crawford won an Oscar in 1949 and starred in the show “Highway Patrol” until 1959. By 1977, when he hosted “SNL,” Crawford didn’t seem to have a lot going on, or be particularly motivated to participate in the show. How can you tell? He delivered his monologue from a comfortable arm chair. Crawford was only in two sketches: One was about Highway Patrol, and one was about J. Edgar Hoover, who happened to be the subject of his new movie. It was almost like having no host at all, which is honestly not as bad as having, say, Olympic champion Michael Phelps.

(...and I think the key reason for his hosting might have indeed been in efforts to plug his then soon to be released film The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover...and which has of course been a constant reason for SNL to book many of their hosts for many years)
