Noir Alley

I love the way artists steal everything, eat up everything, what’s yours is mine.  Came upon this quote from Charles Bukowski today.  Of course he stole it.  But it is really apropos — “An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way.  An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.”

What's happening with Noir Alley this weekend? I was setting my DVR and noticed there are two different Sidney Poitier movies at midnight Saturday and 10 AM Sunday. Are these noirs or is this maybe a tribute to Sidney?  I know we lost this wonderful actor and man a few weeks ago.

Starting Primetime tonight and running through tomorrow afternoon (ending Sunday Primetime), is a 24-hr tribute to Poitier. Noir Alley was preempted this week. I believe tomorrow is also what would have been Poitier’s 95th birthday.

No Way Out with Richard Widmark.  Sounds fine to me.

No Way Out is considered a noir with a social justice theme (which Zanuck was becoming known for with films like Gentleman's Agreement and Pinky.

Widmark is good in that just-borderline-over-the-top and this would be the last film where he had that type of persona;   While in the later noir Pickup on South Street Widmark is a low level criminal his screen persona is toned down.    After that film Widmark mostly did western and adventure films.

Miss Michael Learned, famous for her role as Olivia (Liv) on The Waltons, should never be allowed to act in a film noir, of course no director would ever cast her as one so we are safe on that front.

In Britain you have to be very mindful of the pub hours.  As soon as they open you’ll need that bracer.  Later on you order the plowman’s lunch and wash that down with several English ales from the tap .  Play a few games of darts and next thing you know the pub is closed.   They close (or used to) in the afternoon.  They also close pretty early at night.  So you have to be mindful of that.

They got rid of the afternoon closing laws in the 80s but some places in rural areas still close in the afternoons out of custom (or perhaps due to the lack of customers).  Those laws were enacted during WWI that restricted alcohol consumption during mealtimes only, so as not to disrupt the war effort.    Today, most pubs still close at the relatively early (by global big-city standards) hour of 23:00.  A few have late night licences or 24 hour licences and stay open later, usually near the touristy spots.

When I was there in ‘85 I saw a lot of locals rolling their own cigarettes.  It was rare to see a filter tipped cigarette.  So yeah, I’ll be looking at that.  Hoping for some realistic British drinking pub scenes too.

All of a sudden, it seems TCM has been showing the upcoming "Noir Alley" entry "Cast a Dark Shadow" more frequently-- it was on mere months ago.  Perfect for Eddie's slot.   Could Dirk Bogarde be any better?   His sociopathy has a cunning, sulky, seductive edge.   He's not entirely prepared for the shrewd pragmatism of his latest prey, the wonderful Margaret Lockwood.  Love the way she (as a fellow "adventurer") sees through him-- to an extent--  yet takes her chances anyway.

Great nightclub scene with torch singing.  I love the dense, almost suffocating atmosphere of British Fifties' noir,  so well represented here.

A minor British noir, but fun, with twists, is "The Limping Man",  with an American protagonist, Lloyd Bridges.    He's returning to London after the war, to see a woman.   Love Lloyd Bridges.   It streams free on youtube:

Some will object, but I personally believe the US should prohibit all alcohol sales between midnight and 6:00 AM.

One law for the entire nation makes no sense.  E.g.  What is "reasonable" for Las Vegas or New York City isn't the same as in some small town.

I actually did not mean the US government should pass such a law, but that is not a bad idea.  Every state should pass such a law.  There are too many drunks driving around already.  I am not opposed to drinking, but you should have enough by midnight and not need it before 6:00 AM.

Not a question of "reasonable" by location, but public safety.  Not to mention all the people who stop by convenience store and pick up a six pack (or more) and then throw the cans or bottles out on the streets as they finish them.

Remember the night shift workers and the split shift workers.  Their gig is what it is and a cold beer at end of shift say at 3 am is certainly not too much to ask for.  The “work week” phrase always gets me, like everybody works 9 to 5 Monday thru Friday,  off on holidays and weekends.  Well,  what about the guys and gals that have to work holidays and weekends and odd hours?

There are not many pub scenes in CADS. Dirky stays pretty close to wife number one and she is not much of a pub drinker.

Outside of that relationship he's pretty much  a loner. And as a fortune hunter he's looking for a lady with a nice fat

bank account and the hunting is better in more upscale venues than the Weary Weasel.  Pound for pound.
