Who is that, JJG?  Wow!

That's Ava Gardner in The Killers, Thompson.

(...and yes James, I agree...Ava's femme fatale in this flick might be right up there with Jane Greer's Cathy Moffat in OOTP)

Yeah, I have, unwatchable. And I discovered that Jane Greer was nominated AND won the Hottest Femme Fatale Oscar in '47 for her performance in Out of the Past.

(...they only had that category for that one year, just in case you might be wonderin' here)

OK, probably looking in all the wrong places, but I cannot find a reference to Jane Greer ever winning an Oscar.    So I assume this is a joke?

You assume correctly here, Cid.

(...I know...now what's the chances of ME joking around here, RIGHT?!)  ;)

I suppose Ava's sexy,  obviously all the men here think so,  and they ought to know better than I do  ( a heterosexual woman.)  I've just never understood the appeal of Ava Gardner -and not because I'm what I stated above , there are lots of classic female stars I consider to be beautiful and sexy.  Just not Ava,  I just don't get it.

Plus,  her character in The Killers  is boring.  Kitty is not nearly as interesting as many other femme fatale characters in noir.  Not Ava's fault, they don't give her much to say.  I guess the producers just thought all you had to do was look at her.

While I enjoy Jane Greer in Out of the Past, I still prefer her in The Big Steal.  She did do a better acting job in OOTP, but I find TBS more entertaining.

Yep, I know we've discussed this before on the boards in the past MissW, and in the case of Ava in the general sense, all I can tell you in regard to her "appeal" is that I was smitten with her the very first time I saw her in some old movie on TV back when I was about 13 y/o and the feeling has never subsided since. I suppose this might stem from how she's always given me a sense of "earthy sultriness" of herself. And also since my youth, I've also been a little more attracted to brunettes than to women with lighter colored hair, and of which I think her hair is thick and lustrous. I also think her dark arched eyebrows are sexy as hell, and also her full lips as well, and that she has a beautifully shaped nose. And yep, I even think that little cleft in her chin is sexy too.

And now regarding  her in The Killers, I might have to agree A BIT with your take on this, however I would say that she DOES still make quite an impression in this film and even though as you said they didn't give her much to say in it.

(...but remember here, still "impression" enough by her performance in this film to raise her to A-list status, as this would be her star-making movie role)

It takes some skill to play the femme fatale.

In The Killers, Gardner ruined Burt Lancaster's life- twice- by allowing him to go to prison for her and then double-crossed him on the heist. Then, she set up Edmond O'Brien to be murdered, but the attempt failed. Pretty cold-hearted gal, and yeah, a femme fatale.

In Out of the Past, Jane Greer murdered three men. Hell, she shot Kirk Douglas twice! She wasn't just a femme fatale- she was pure poison. And if given the opportunity, I'd have nibbled on that lower lip for a week.

I'm sure if we gave it some thought, we could find a more evil woman in film noir, but Greer's Kathy Moffat is up there, way  up there.

Though it's not generally considered to be film noir (though I suppose an argument might be made for it to be so) and since it's outside of the accepted classic period of film noir (1941 to 1959), Frankenheimer's 1962 film The Manchurian Candidate contains what I consider the most evil female performance ever- Angela Lansbury's interpretation of Eleanor Shaw Iselin- a femme fatale for the ages; not in the romantic sense, but she is evil personified.

Kathy murdered 3 men?    She didn't murder the accountant,  but I guess she was an accomplish just like his secretary was.

Still one femme fatale for the ages!

PS:   edited since Kathy did shoot Mitchum leading to both of their deaths.

Even Frank Sinatra is good in Manchurian Candidate.  That’s a movie that stays with ya.  I give a shout out to Peggy Cummins in Gun Crazy.  Flawless performance IMO.

Ya know, for some reason, every time I hear The Eagles' song 'Desperado' on the radio, this movie comes to mind...

Ava even has her own museum in Smithfield, NC. That was often listed as her place of birth before more research was  done and  it

turned  out she was actually born in Grabtown. Easy to see why she would prefer the name Smithfield. I've always thought she  was

pretty sexy, though no more so  than other contemporaneous sexy  dames. Maybe she had an inner, spiritual beauty. Nah.

Peggy Cummins does give a flawless performance in Gun Crazy.    As for her femme fatale creed:  Well at the start the male character (also well acted by John Dall ),   doesn't need much convincing to go to the dark side by committing robberies.       But when it came to killing others,   it took her sexual manipulation to keep him in check and  it wasn't until the very end that he was able to release himself from her grip.

Note that I have always felt the ending would have been better if his childhood cop friend wasn't involved.     E.g. would he have shot her to prevent her from shooting at any policeman or was it because it was his old time friend?        If the former than we know that he truly had released himself from her grip.

You turn on the news and you can’t help but think of Dr. Strangelove.  Sterling Hayden is impossibly good in the film.  It is only 95 minutes.  That stat sort of stuck out.  I doubt there is a poster on board who doesn’t love this movie.

Well Thompson, seein' as how my wife doesn't post on these boards, you've got a good chance of still bein' right here, as she's never been able to understand why I laugh so hard while I'm watching this movie.

(...nope, if asked, her opinion of it would be something like, "Meh, it's okay, I guess"...AND, I doubt she might be in the minority of women who feel this way about it, too...maybe it's more a "guy's movie", eh?!)

I just loved George C. Scott’s secretary’s outfit.  It was perfect.  The only female role I think.

Aah, yes. British actress Tracy Reed. A "stone fox" as we used to say back in the day! AND, who I recall does a pretty decent American accent in this.
