It's considered one of the ultimate noirs. I'm honestly not sure if it hais shown on NOIR ALLEY or not, but it has shown on TCM and was featured as a FATHOM events big screen showing. Suf that would be like taking a dress worn by Carole Lombard and putting it on Marjorie Main, and expecting it to look the same. Bad idea! Ok, who doesn't love Carole Lombard? I wish they'd show more of Carole...of course, since she died so tragically and so much before her time, there simply aren't as many Carole Lombard films as we'd all like. And yes, Carole always looks gorgeous. But let's have a little love for Marjorie Main. I know she was in some thankless roles ( the wife of Vincent Price in His Kind of Woman comes to mind...), but she was also in some good films. I'm thinking in particular of Ministry of Fear, a delightful, very entertaining, kind of noirish British film directed by one of my faves, Fritz Lang. There are lots of good things to say about this movie, but the one I want to focus on is the casting of Marjorie Main as Ray Milland's romantic interest. Marjorie is so pretty in this. plus, she handles a German accent fairly well (or is it Austrian? probably German, for reasons the story uncovers quite early on.) Here she is looking like she means business: I think she could carry off a Lombard-like gown quite well.

Easy to do though, as we write posts and all these old names keep swirling around in our brains, right? Now you are so right, that Marjorie was a dish and could carry off any gown, even though Carole was a bit more seductive. Poor old Marjorie Main, only got to play maids and Ma Kettle roles, but I still love her, just probably not in a Lombard outfit. Thanks, Miss Wonderly and I agree with you so much about Carole Lombard's allure.

I'll admit, I wouldn't have the nerve to tell Marjorie Main to her face, that she couldn't wear a evening dress. Speaking of people one hardly ever saw elegantly dressed in a film, that Dick Powell film from last week had Jane Darwell in an evening gown with all kinds of jewelry adorning her. I was surprised to see Ma Joad all decked out like that. 1

Is it just to spoil our fun, since they are having no fun in South Korea. Thanks for the SPAM update, Miss Wonderly. I think I may have seen this film years ago as well. I dont really remember much of it, but I do remember the ending scene at the airport, so I must've have seen it, or part of it........ It started off somewhat annoying and then went full bore with repetition. The staging of his death was very appropriate. I couldn't remember if the John Mcintire character was crooked or if his eyesight was failing. I knew it was one or the other. I agree about the plot being confusing, especially as it seemed to simply be about finding the two guys who killed the cop. Took a lot of detours along the way. One of my favorite Marjorie Main moments is in The Egg & I when she's setting the table for dinner and she just pushes all the crap off the table onto the floor and then sets the table.

cmovieviewer
In the wrap-up for Scene of the Crime, Eddie mentioned that he would be in Chicago in August to help introduce films for a Noir film festival. I see on the Film Noir Foundation web site that the Noir City Chicago Film Festival is from August 17-23: http://www.filmnoirfoundation.org/news.html Anyone living near the Chicago area (or traveling to) who is planning to attend? If so, I am very jealous. Looks like there are other locations for similar festivals each month through the end of the year. I guess this is how the Foundation helps pay for film restorations and continues the cycle for future festivals.
