I'm trying to wrangle Cable into the budget, I'm tired of going without. Or maybe I'll try TCM on Demand whatever that is. I will have a look. Or that does that require a cable company? Life is tough.

Sling TV over the internet has a package with TCM you can watch it where ever you have a wi fi hot spot so even over your phone.

there is a decided resemblance to Olivia, I think.

also, wasn't BRIAN AHERNE married to JOAN FONTAINE at one time or another?

Nice of the de Havilland girls to look out for Ma and an ex when they didn't get the part.

Yes, they were married. Lillian appeared in small parts in films.

My lack of participation is not a conscious act of disapproval, but more a matter of how and when I watch movies. Since I follow a fairly regimented schedule, I don't see the Noir Alley films until long after everyone else is done discussing them. Either that, or it's something that I saw so long ago that I can't recall enough specifics to add anything to the conversation. Of the remaining movies, I fairly recently watched Desperate, and I saw Angel Face and The Stranger many years ago. I have not seen The Gangster, and will be recording it.

I hope you did not take my comment to mean that I thought you did not post on the Noir Alley thread as a "conscious act of disapproval". Of course not. I just thought it was interesting, how we're all different here on these boards. And pretty much the only reason that I usually limit myself to this thread is simply because these days I don't have a lot of  time to spend here. I used to, years ago, spend a lot of time on these boards - - too much, actually, as I realized after a while that an hour - or several hours ! - would go by as I read and watched and posted on the boards here. It made me kind of unproductive with my time. So now I discipline myself to just stick mainly to one thread, and this is just the thread topic I'm consistently the most interested in.

But of course I do read other threads, and sometimes even post in them.

Anyway, I absolutely was not suggesting any kind of criticism of you, Lawrence, as to how much or how little you contribute to this or any other thread.  (We all know you never go on the "I Just Watched" thread !? )

We all gravitate to the topics here that interest us the most, and that's as it should be.

I took no offense at your original comment. I just thought I'd explain my absence. Noir is one of my favorite genres, and I've seen most of the movies that have been discussed on here. I would add to the discussion if I had anything new to offer, but you all seem to cover everything about each film in depth. Perhaps I should have added earlier that, while I don't often post here, I do read the thread, and I look forward to everyone's thoughts each week.

Thanks to Lav and Laurence for the info. I had thought there would be a number of movies each week, but there seems to be just one. I had thought the enterprising was a bit more lavish. But not complaining. So the thread is fundamentally a noir thread with a special emphasis on the featured weekly offering with Muller. Is that about right?

I'm trying to wrangle Cable into the budget, I'm tired of going without. Or maybe I'll try TCM on Demand whatever that is. I will have a look. Or that does that require a cable company? Life is tough.

I finally signed up for TCM on demand through my computer.  However, I had to have a "media" connection, Spectrum in my case.  When you go to sign up, it brings up a box with the various media sources.  It required that I set up an online account with Spectrum to access TCM OD on the website.  No charges, but now Spectrum wants me to do some things online, which I don't.

I signed up just to see the Noir Alleys that I was missing or had not recorded.  Have only watched two movies on TCM OD, but mainly because I have to watch through computer at the computer and it is a pain in the rear (cheap chair).  Do not send signals anywhere from computer.  WiFi deactivated.

I can't think of anything more difficult than trying to watch a Noir on a phone.  But then again, I only use a phone to talk and very rarely for that.

Just curious, what about other noirs missed or not recorded? Or is it because of the very popular Muller that Noir Alley is so important to record, having the ability, for instance, not only having the movie but his commentary as well? The reason I ask is because you said that signed just to see Noir Alley, which is after all only four movies a month. But surely you record other noirs during the month yes? In other words, Muller seems to be a considerable part of the appeal alongside the movie itself. I know Muller is very popular here but I have never seen him.

CigarJoe, I did not see TCM on any of the packages that Sling offered. Perhaps they have made a change.

Anyway, thanks all for your comments. I'm leaning toward the old fashioned cable. My thought is find a way to afford it by cancelling Netflix and stop buying Kefir four times a month ($20), for instance, and making other similar cuts and make a go of it during the football season and enjoying TCM at the same time. I can cancel after six months if I want.

But enough, something to much of this ...back to Noir ... and thanks.

I have been fairly good at remembering to either watch the 10AM Sunday one or record either the Sat. Midnight one or the Sunday one.  I do have many of the movies that are on Noir Alley on DVD or have seen them.  However, I do record or watch Noir Alley because of Muller's commentaries (my wife hates them).

I don't think I would have signed up for TCM On Demand just to hear Muller though.  Forget which movie, but there was a lot of discussion about it and TCM On Demand was only way to see it without purchasing it.

SPOILERS

I had seen The Locket several times before, (not in a long time though), but for some reason I had forgotten a lot of plot points. What happened to Mitchum really threw me. The script leaves some things up to the viewer to decide. What really made Mitchum do that? Did Day really kill Ricardo Cortez? Was it self defense? Did she deliberately marry Gene Raymond to come full circle to her old nemesis? Or was it coincidence? It doesn't diminish the film not to answer all they mysteries surrounding Laraine Day's character. I've never thought much one way or the other about Day. But she's very good in this. I could see both Olivia or Joan in the role too......

Well she wasn't watching a Noir just a news program from the Sling "a la carte" package, while in Seatac Airport, also on a layover in Denver.

I think Mitchum's character killed himself because he couldn't live with his guilt about not being straight with the cops re the shooting.  Even though he said to the shrink that he had taken a sleeping pill and slept through the execution and all his guilt was now transferred to the shrink, he was glib and almost too mellow about the whole thing.  But he couldn't live with himself.  Sometimes with suicides they seem contented right before the act because they have made their final decision.

We don't know for certain if Day killed Cortez but I think she did.  She certainly didn't want to tell the cops she was there.  At first I thought maybe it was self defense.  Maybe he was attracted to her, came on too strong so she shot him.   But one of our posters wrote that maybe Cortez caught her stealing and I think this might be what happened.

Did she seek out Gene Raymond or was that a coincidence?  Was it fate?  I still haven't decided for sure.

So many things open to interpretation which makes the film so interesting and thought-provoking.

Maybe RICARDO CORTEZ was contractually obliged to be shot in every film he appeared in at the time.

He was, for a good stretch "the most shootable man in motion pictures!"

Yes, they leave a lot of it up the viewer to decide. You are probably right about Mitchum too.

LOL. That's true. Once in awhile he played a good guy and lived!

i just now tried to look up how many times RICARDO CORTEZ was shot onscreen but could not find it...I foggily recall FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD (the precode documentary) has a montage of all of them.

didn't KAY FRANCIS shoot him twice?

...in the movies, I mean...

Yes. At LEAST twice. (Kay) He played a good guy in 13 Women. Also Symphony for Six Million (?) Not sure of the exact title. I remember a hospital mystery I think he also survived in. So it did happen occasionally. :D

There was another film I saw not too long ago (Hat and Glove?) where he was the protagonist........cant remember if he died though!

As I've said before, two reasons I love Noir Alley are:

A. Late Saturday night is one of the few times I can schedule to sit down and watch the film.

B. If I fall asleep I can wake up and finish it Sunday morning.

C. If there were a third reason I guess it would be that I can catch it on Sling TV's TCM ON DEMAND, which I don't know is exactly like normal TCM ON DEMAND.  I do know several films that have shown up in that ON DEMAND section don't stay for very long.

Okay as far as THE LOCKET (1946) goes I really enjoyed it and I love the poster.  The thing I love about the poster is that it looks like a different way of looking at her.  And the way her hair is reminds me of what it looked like when she was a child.  I know I am reading too much into it, but I can see it. LOL  Anyway I really enjoyed how the movie kept me guessing as to whether or not everything in the flashbacks was true right up to the point where she denied ever being upstairs when the shot was fired.  Then you knew it wasn't just the misconceptions and paranoia of the person telling the story.

So the weirdest thing for me is that I enjoyed this film, but I don't think I would ever have the desire to sit down and watch it again unless I was watching it with someone who hadn't seen it.  Anywhoo there is what I think about this the return to Noir Alley.  So glad we're back in the shadows.

I have spectrum and their TCM ON DEMAND Options are iffy, and I don’t seem to have the same choices anyone else does, but in general a dozen or more titles are available. And they generally do a pretty good job of selecting films I want to see (especially rare raunchy titles) , although I don’t remember the last time a NOIR ALLEY entry was featured as an option for my particular on demand.

TCM On Demand and TCM On Demand on Spectrum are confusing. TCM OD is accessed through computer or similar, whereas TCM OD on Spectrum is accessed through cable.  Wish one would change its name.

Spectrum has On Demand for lots and lots of channels/networks depending on which tier you subscribe to.  TCM OD on Spectrum has anywhere from None to a dozen movies.  I do not recall any Noir Alleys on it (nor "raunchy" for that matter.)

Well when I say “raunchy”- I mean “raunchy for TCM” like LADY SNOWBLOOD 1 and 2, EYES OF LAURA MARS, SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY, ERASERHEAD, KONGO And a handful of others I forget.

They tend to be pretty good about including the horror movies and the late Saturday night TCM underground showings...

STAR 80 never did show up though.

See I did get STAR 80.  I believe I got all of those, but if my memory serves ERASERHEAD was only available to me for a couple of days then gone.

I wish TCM would show more "raunchy" stuff and beyond just "raunchy" for them. ;) I do love that stuff because it is usually either entertaining or bewildering.
