Thelma Todd day on TCM-(suicide or murder?)

Recommended Posts

Well, let us see if anyone even gets to see this 1?-(I've heard that sev. others are now also having poroblems posting in, on this superb website) Most Golden Age/Studio-System fans on here, know whom the very long gone actress: Thelma Todd-(1906-35) was & is. She's obviously compared to Jean Harlow-(1911-37) Although, she didn't have the charisma of Harlow. Comparison mostly lays in the fact of the blonde-bombshell business. & Thelma, was in silents as well, but her far greatest flix-(she really didn't have time to do-many pix!) were with: "Laurel & Hardy"-(shorts)& "The Marx Brothers!" The terrific 1931 "Monkey Business" & the even more hilarious '32 "Horse Feathers"

Whatever she did, she knew how to save/invest her doe$$$ & owned a rather large: Sidewalk-Cafe in Pacific Palisades.-(some out there now call it>Malibu & vice-versa?) She lived above her own place as well. However, a lotta' speculation of a murder was laid-on her business partner & co-owner of the Cafe: Roland West. He of course was cleared of all charges. Mostly though, it was Thelma's relationship with: "Lucky" Luciano-(1896-1962) whom she was seeing quite a lot at time of her bizarre death-(unlike MM & other(s), Todd, had no reason, or history of depression, etc & quite the opposite. Her career was on the upswing & she loved her Cafe too. However, "Lucky," desperately wanted gambling installed in her very high clientel place. & she was firmly against it. It was a huge hang-out for Movie Stars at the Beach, so he smelled money BIG-TIME! Her last night, she was given a party by Ida Lupino at the famous: Cafe Trocadero on Sunset-(all thats left of it, are 3 steps now?) Thelma, was chauffered home after this party & had walked up 100 stairs to her apartment over her Cafe & in high heels!-(obviously not too loaded) Next morning she was found in the garage below, in her Lincoln. Slumped over the wheel & bleeding badly from the nose & mouth. Verdict>Carbon Monoxide poisoining? Anyway, her Cafe was left to Lola Lane-(senior of the WB Lane sisters) by R. West. Of whom was her husband. Amazingly, for Hollywood, it's still standing!? Located at 17575 Pacific Coast Highway & was used for tv work' Sadly, the most famous thing about this actress, is her death at 29. She was, per the course in that glorious era. Interred somewhere in Glendale's mammoth "Forest Lawn Cem."

(P.S. Speaking of Harlow. To you true cinemabuffs, the rarely shown 1930 "Hells Angels" (1930) is on this week.)
