TCM Programming Challenge #47: The European Grand Prix

Recommended Posts

TCM Programming Challenge #47: The European Grand Prix

Challenge #1:

London, Dublin, Cardiff, Edinburgh, and Belfast Calling

From the days of Charles Laughton, Cary Grant, Greer Garson and Deborah Kerr to the days of contemporary players like Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, and Helen Mirren, actors and actresses from the British isles have given outstanding performances in films both at home and abroad. This challenge requires that your Star of the Month must be someone born in one of the countries that make up the island: England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or Ireland (not part of the UK but I'm allowing it). This person can be either classic era or contemporary, and I'm allowing those who spent most of those careers in Hollywood. You may have 4 films in this category which will not go against your premiere limit.

Challenge #2:

When in Rome

Rome is called the eternal city, so to commemorate that, I would like you to include a block of at least 4 films tied in some way to the city: by being films set or filmed in Italy, by  including  Italian films, by featuring an Italian star, by concerning members of the Roman Catholic church, or by any other tie you can think of. You may have 2 films in this category which will not go against your premiere limit.

Challenge #3:

French Kiss

In this challenge, you must feature at least 3 French made films at any point throughout your schedule, including inside the TCM imports block. You may have 2 films in this category which will not go against your premiere limit.

Challenge #4:

Foreign and Domestic Travel

In this challenge, you must feature at least 6  films at any point throughout your schedule, be it American or European films, that have not aired on TCM for a long time (at least 10 years)  including inside the Noir Alley, TCM Underground or  TCM imports block. You must use MovieCollectorOH's last seen file to help you.

Challenge #5:

Stockholm Surprise (optional)

Include a block with at least one tie to Sweden, be it Ingrid Berman, Greta Garbo, Ingmar Bergman, Ann-Margret, ABBA music, Swedish massages, or IKEA furniture (kidding on the last one) You may have 2 films in this category which will not go against your premiere limit.

Challenge #6:

Spanish Fly (optional)

This might seem odd, but include at least 3 films that include at least one of the Latin dances: the Tango, the Cha-Cha, the Rumba, the Carioca,  or the Bolero. You may have 2 films in this category which will not go against your premiere limit.

Challenge #7:

It's Greek to Me (optional)

Include one film that was shot or set at least in part in Greece on your schedule.

Challenge #8:

Pushing past the Iron Curtain (optional)

Include at least one film set or filmed in Poland, The Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary Ukraine, Romania , or the former Yugoslav republics on your schedule.

Challenge #9:

German Songbird (optional)

Feature a block of at least 4 Marlene Dietrich films. You may have 2 films in this category which will not go against your premiere limit.

Challenge #10:

Malta (optional)

Feature a film linked to the island nation, be it the famed Falcon, the Maltese Dog, or being actually filmed there (like Popeye, The Spy Who Loved Me, or Gladiator)

You are allowed up to 18 premieres in this challenge.  The week selected must be between June 1, 2023 – May 31, 2023.  The challenge ends Thursday, May 26, 2022 at 11:59 PM EST. Good luck!

Some background:

Path40a created the first TCM Programming Challenge in February, 2006 to give people a glimpse into the complexities of the programming process. The challenge has endured because it allows entrants to exercise their imagination, display their knowledge and introduce rare classics. TCM Programming Challenges are neither sponsored nor endorsed by TCM but tcmprogrammr has stated that programmers happily steal ideas from these schedules.  Many entrants have had the joy of seeing their themes and movie selections air on TCM. The Challenge is to create a week’s schedule following TCM’s standard format.

When it begins/When it ends:

This challenge starts at 10:00 PM (EST) Monday, April 18, 2022 and ends 11:59 PM (EST) Thursday, May 26, 2022. A voting thread will be started shortly after the end of the challenge.

Who can enter/Who can vote:

Everyone is welcome to create and post a schedule.  Anyone who was a registered forum member prior to January, 2022 will be allowed to vote for their favorite schedule in a separate voting thread after the challenge is closed.  You may either vote by posting your selection on the thread or by directly messaging the moderator. The winner has the honor of hosting the next challenge.

What you need to do:

1. Create a week's schedule which begins at 6 AM (EST) Sunday and ends at 6 AM (EST) the following Sunday.  The week selected must be between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023.

2.  Each day’s programming should begin at 6 AM (EST.) However, if you begin an occasional day at 6:15 AM or 6:30 AM that’s no problem.

3.  Primetime/Evening MUST begin at 8 PM (EST.)

4. Feature films must start on the hour, quarter-hour, half-hour or three-quarters hour.  Short films or other material can be used to “fill-in” between movies so that there is never more than 14 minutes of unscheduled time between features.

Your schedule must include:

1.  Star of the Month  --  At least 4 movies on one evening to showcase an actor.  The SOTM must have a body of work large enough to allow similar blocks the other weeks in the month.

2.  Silent Sunday Night  -- A silent film which begins at approximately 12 AM (EST) Sunday night/Monday morning.

3.  TCM Imports  -- A foreign film that begins at approximately 2 AM (EST) Monday morning.

4.  TCM Spotlight  -- A group of films which showcase a theme which appears in prime time one night a week for a month.

5.  TCM Underground  -- A little known or “cult” film which begins at approximately 2 AM (EST) Friday night.

6.  Noir Alley  -- A film noir which may air either at 12 AM or 10 AM on Sunday.

7.  Mandatory Challenges as outlined for TCM Programming Challenge, #47 “The European Grand Tour.”

Oh-by-the-ways:

Silent Sunday Night, TCM Imports, Noir Alley, and TCM Underground are exempt from the limit of premieres stated in the requirements for this challenge.

You may include a Guest Programmer but you are not required to do so unless it is a mandatory challenge requirement.

Programming related to birthdays, anniversaries of historical or cinematic importance, genres, places or anything else that can reasonably be thematically grouped together is encouraged. Thought provoking, humorous and/or outrageous themes are especially welcome.

Programming notes to explain your themes or to provide additional information on your selected movies are not required but are greatly encouraged. These notes should be on a separate post following the posting of your schedule.

Format and Justifications:

Follow the standard TCM scheduling format for each film: Time, Title, Year, Actor(s) Director(s) Studio, Running Time and justification.

Justifications:

P/S for movies or programs which have been previously shown.

E or “Exempt” for Silent Sunday Night, TCM Imports, Noir Alley, or TCM Underground films.

PD or “Public Domain” for films in the public domain.

“Premiere” for movies which count toward the Challenge allowance on premiers.

No notation is needed for any movie in the original Turner film library.

How to tell if a movie has aired previously on TCM:

Many thanks to Moviecollector for this “unofficial report” of what has aired on TCM since 2001. It can be a great resource as you are creating your schedule.

Thanks to previous Challenge Moderators for the opportunity to liberally "borrow" from their instructions.  Questions?  Just ask.

Question on Challenge # 4  --  Foreign & Domestic Travel.

So, the challenge is to find films that have not aired on TCM in a long while that will go into either the TCM Underground, Imports or Noir Alley blocks??  They don't have to be about "foreign or domestic travel?"  Just films that have not been seen for a long time???  Inquiring minds, etc. etc.

That's correct. I probably should have phrased it better.

Pardon, CinemaInternational, but now I have a little confusion on Challenge #4.

My initial thinking was that 6+ films are to be included anywhere in the week's schedule, and these films must not have aired in 10+ years, not even in the Underground, Imports or Noir Alley blocks. Or is it as lydecker suggests, that these films are to be scheduled only for these three TCM blocks? Thanks!

Feature a block of at least 4 Marlene Dietrich films. You may have 2 films in this category which will not go against your premiere limit.

Just out of curiosity, how many Marlene Dietrich films have not appeared on TCM?

Also out of curiosity (and for fun!), I did some digging, and out of the 56 acting credits IMDB lists for Dietrich, it seems TCM has shown 31, according to MovieCollectorOH's database.

I think you mean June 1, 2023 - May 31, 2024 (not May 31, 2023.)  Or, do you mean June 1, 2022 - May 31, 2023???  Let us know! Thanks.

Such a great schedule, Skimpole -- I LOVE JAMES MASON!!!! All the tributes are good and the movies filmed in Rome. I can't believe you found movies filmed in all those countries in one lump! Love the premieres from great directors--whatever that Billy Wilder movie is, I want to see it!

We start our week with five films on Sunday for birthday boy Tyrone Power.  The last one, Witness for the Prosecution, conveniently segues into three movies about questionable justice, and the TCM premiere of Max Ophuls’ The Memory of Justice.  Sunday concludes with French Kiss, with a silent and two TCM Imports, all from France, and where passion is an important theme.  This segues into the first film for Monday, honoring Marlene Dietrich with five films.  (The first film is actually German, but the director was French).  Monday marks the anniversary of her death.  The fifth films segues into our celebration of birthday boy Orson Welles.  This  includes his most famous acting role in a movie he didn’t direct, and seven movies he did direct.  Which includes the TCM premiere of The Other Side of the Wind.

Tuesday begins with the When in Rome challenge.  But why choose four films, when you can spend a whole day there and make it the Monthly spotlight?  So we have a mix of films, including sword and sandals spectaculars, as well as contemporary films by Italy’s greatest filmmakers, such as De Sica, Fellini, Antonioni, Pasolini, Rossellini and Visconti.  Wednesday starts with three films honoring Rossellini’s birthday, (his least Italian ones), then most of the day honoring star of the month James Mason.  (His birthday is on the 15th.) We begin with three of his forties films, then include three episodes of the 1980 British television series Hollywood which Mason narrated.  Rights issues strongly suggest it will never be shown on TCM.  But getting around that is the whole point of the TCM challenge.  The actual evening starts with Mason in four movies about homicide.  In two he’s a suspect, two he helps find the guilty party and in one he does his best to make sure the guilty party gets off.  And for the final film in the Mason spotlight, the TCM premiere of his final movie, The Shooting Party.

Thursday is devoted to movies that have appeared before, but haven’t since 2009.  We haven’t seen Spirited Away since 2009 either, which segues into three movies about dreaming.  Ideal for the after midnight hours.  For Friday we deal as best we can with the remaining European challenges, with three movies as part of the Stockholm Surprise, one for It’s All Greek to Me, Two for Pushing past the Iron Curtain (Czechoslovakia and Poland) and the most famous film that has anything to do with Malta.  Friday evening deals with rebellious youth, featuring two startling Czech women, the lesser known movie based on a Who concept album, a thoughtful movie on the problems with illegal narcotics, and a sixties concert movie.  For the TCM Underground, we have the best British movie about 1968 and another about a woman you definitely don’t want to take home to mother.  Or your own home for that matter.  For Saturday I noticed that I had a lot of remaning premieres.  So I decided to spend it on movies from great directors TCM has yet to show.  We see premieres from Hawks, Wilder, (Satyajit) Ray, Coppola, Kubrick, Bresson, Scorsese and Bunuel.  Spielberg is often condemned as a maker of Saturday matinee films.  So why not spend that afternoon with two of his most popular films?  We interrupt the afternoon to have a film from birthday boy Phil Silvers, while tonight’s Noir entry is an adaptation of Simenon and his Inspector Maigret, direct from Jean Renoir.

Great stuff, Nakano! Good job your first time out-- it's always crazy the first time you do stuff. You scheduled lots of movies and themes I'd love to see. I love seeing schedules from new participants! :)

Thank you very much, there was several movies i could not include, had to switch for others but I'am satisfied. I would have put some others but the theatrical releases were very limited so I did not want to be eliminated right away or the selections contested!

🎬  CHALLENGE 5: Stockholm Surprise – Inger Stevens Tribute
The lovely Inger Stevens (1934-1970) was from Stockholm. Featuring both Stevens and Anthony Quinn, the last film in this block, A Dream of Kings (1969), leads straight into CHALLENGE 7.

🎬  CHALLENGE 6: Spanish Fly – Bailemos el Tango, la Rumba, el Bolero y la Carioca
George Raft was rather a gifted dancer. He earned his living as a taxi dancer in New York for a time, then he was launched professionally after winning a Charleston contest. In this group of films Raft dances the Bolero with Carole Lombard and the Tango with Frances Drake in Bolero (1934), the Rumba with Margo in Rumba (1935), and the Tango with Janet Blair in Broadway (1942).
Fred Astaire wrote in his autobiography that Raft performed the “neatest, fastest Charleston dance ever”, so it seems only fitting to include Astaire in this block of films as he dances the Carioca with Ginger Rogers in Flying Down to Rio (1933).

🎬  CHALLENGE 7: It’s Greek to Me – With Guest Programmer, Alexis Zorba
This block of films includes the bio-pic Kazantzakis (2017). Author of Zorba the Greek (1946), The Last Temptation of Christ (1955), Freedom or Death (1956), and others, Kazantzakis is commonly regarded as a giant of modern Greek literature.

🎬  CHALLENGE 8: Pushing Past the Iron Curtain: Austria – Freud (1962)

🎬  CHALLENGE 9: German Songbird: Marlene Dietrich and Josef von Sternberg
This block of films featuring the coupling of Marlene Dietrich and Joseph von Sternberg begins Saturday evening in primetime, takes a quick break for Dietrich in Touch of Evil (1958) for Noir Alley, then jumps right back into it.

🎬  CHALLENGE 10: Malta Swashbucklers – Cutthroat Island (1995), Pirates (1986)
The TCM Underground features were both filmed (in part) in Malta.
