classicsfan1119
The original "Manchurian Candidate" has just been released on DVD. I suggest that you buy it, treasure it, and avoid the disappointment of the remake. ;)ML
bansi4
There is only one reason I would watch this remake and that is Meryl Streep who I believe will do her usual good acting job as the evil mother. Mongo
jhnrndglt
BTW - Mrs. Iselin is NO longer Mrs. Iselin in the remake, she is Eleanor Shaw. So many changes...why not do an original story rather than take a classic film and change it around?
brackenhe
It seems like this version bears little or no resemblance to the original except it involves a presidential election. I haven't seen it, though, and probably won't unless it comes on Encore or something I have already. What puzzles me the most is *******possible spoiler********* The original is about men captured during the Korean War and brainwashed by the Chinese--hence the title Manchurian Candidate. However, the new version is about 2 Gulf War 1 vets who have chips implanted and has nothing at all to do with China. So why didn't they just call it something else, with a "based on" type credit to the original.
classicsfan1119
Good point, Brakenhe, and I couldn't agree more. Given that so many "remakes" are being produced today that do exactly the same thing (steal the original Title, and then make a totally different movie) I don't understand why there haven't been some lawsuits. I think that it should be manditory for these producers to cite the original movie as the "loosely based-upon source" of their remakes and give credit where it's due. jhnrndglt
Just a viewing of the trailer - the culprit is no longer a government, but the Manchurian International Corporation or some such. And since Senator Iselin no longer exists in this version, "Eleanor" is making her son Raymond the VP candidate. Not sure how the ending will work....but then everything else is changed, and Denzel Washington looks to be doing an especially bad job - at least in the trailer....but... As for a lawsuit...the original screenwriters are credited as is Richard Condon for the novel...so....
